Combine Press Conference Takeaways, Glenn and Campbell Dish on Ben Johnson, Offseason Upgrades, and Other Bears Bullets

It’s Day 52 of the Chicago Bears offseason. The 20th-anniversary re-release of “Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith” dropping on NFL Draft weekend is perfect for me. I can’t imagine a better way to cap my weekend than by turning all my devices on “do not disturb” mode so I can watch one of my favorite movies in theaters.

ICYMI: Bears General Manager Ryan Poles and Head Coach Ben Johnson held court with the media assembled at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. You’ll want to catch up with those posts when you get the time. Aaron Leming (Windy City Gridiron) has five takeaways from Tuesday’s press conferences at the Combine. One of Ben Johnson’s former co-workers in Detroit had nothing but love for the new Bears head coach. Aaron Glenn, who is the new head boss for the New York Jets, spoke glowingly about Johnson:

“He’s a very, very smart man,” Glenn said, via 670 The Score. “He knows offense inside and out. Now, the other good thing about Ben is he knows defense also. So, for him to get a chance to attack teams, that’s one thing he looks at quite a bit, is a defense and how they maneuver with receiver motions and things that. Listen, that’s going to continue to be a tough division that he’s in. All four of those teams are good teams in that division. I look forward to seeing how he operates there.”

Dan Campbell, Johnson’s former boss, had this to say (via Marquee) about the new Bears head coach: “He does not lack ideas, ever. He’s very creative in that regard. He’s a grinder and an unbelievably hard worker.” The Master vs. Apprentice storyline between Dan Campbell and Ben Johnson should be fun to follow in the years to come. © Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK My big takeaway from Tuesday’s press conference quotes is that the Bears have upgraded in a big way at the head coach position. Hearing Bears GM Ryan Poles say that the Bears have improved in the “football IQ” department felt telling. I’ll say this about Ben Johnson: The new Bears head coach provides informative, enlightening, and clear answers to questions. It is a breath of fresh air from what we saw throughout the Matt Eberflus regime. Admittedly, I am surprised. I had no idea what to expect from Johnson. After all, it’s not like we were obsessively watching Lions OC press conferences. But Johnson seems more polished than what I was expecting. Pleasant surprises are my favorite. I’m glad I’m not the only one feeling that way. Jason Lieser (Sun-Times) writes that the new Bears head coach is quickly proving he is an upgrade over the old one. Confession: I couldn’t stop giggling when I heard Ben Johnson refer to D’Andre Swift as “Swifty.” Or is it “Swiftie”? I should know this and that I don’t is going to hurt my street cred in the Swiftie/Swifty community of Bears fans, which I don’t imagine is a large group — but you’d be surprised. Kevin Fishbain (The Athletic) has more on Johnson, Swift, and Bears running back plans for the future. I love the sentiment in this story from the Tribune’s Brad Biggs, which comes with “Chicago Bears aren’t making national headlines at this year’s NFL combine. That’s a welcome change.” as the accompanying headline. © David Banks-Imagn Images Brian Griese, who appeared in 13 games (6 starts) as a Bears QB in 2006 and 2007, quietly parted ways with the San Francisco 49ers. Griese had spent the last three seasons as the Niners’ quarterbacks coach. Maybe Griese will return to the broadcast booth, where I thought he was superb at calling college football games. Or perhaps he parlays his three-year run tutoring Brock Purdy into another NFL coaching gig. (Pro Football Talk)
