Blackhawks 1, Utah 2 — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

The first period felt like a track meet at times, with the Blackhawks and Utah sprinting up and down the ice. Chicago had to kill three penalties in the first period — and allowed only one shot in the six short-handed minutes. On the other side, the Hawks were able to convert their only power play and took a one-goal lead to the room after 20 minutes.

After allowing eight shots on net in the first period, the Blackhawks allowed 14 in the second. They were once again on their heels more than they would like, but were able to flip the ice more frequently than they have recently. Unfortunately, Clayton Keller scored with just 44 seconds left in the period to tie the game.

The Blackhawks spent most of the first 12 minutes of the third period in the wrong zone and it finally caught up with them. Lawson Crouse gave the home team the lead with 7:48 left in regulation on a shot that had eyes. Chicago put up a good fight at the end, but you can’t allow 28 shots in the final 40 minutes and put only 17 on net and come away with a win against a team desperate to get in the playoffs.

    Star 1: Arvid Söderblom

Söderblom had a phenomenal first period. Scoring chances were 13-2 in favor of Utah and high danger chances were 4-0 in favor of the home team, but he didn’t blink. He got clipped at one point and needed some attention but stayed in the game and looked strong. He was really good for 19 minutes in the second period but a rebound found Keller and he made it count to tie the game. He made 21 stops in the first 40 minutes. The game could have easily been out of reach in the third period if Söderblom wasn’t stellar. He stopped 34 of 36 in the game.

    Star 2: the PK

The Blackhawks spent ten minutes in the box and didn’t allow a goal. The penalty killers were outstanding. Chicago allowed nine shots on goal on the five penalties, four of which came on the final Utah advantage.

    Star 3: Seth Jones

The Blackhawks first power play of the night saw Jones with the safety off firing everything at the net and skating confidently. He scored the Hawks’ first goal of the night on this missile. He was also credited with a team-high five hits thru two periods. Hello, trade value!

    Key Takeaways

The Blackhawks had to kill two penalties in the first period that were questionable. This one on only Connor Murphy felt egregious.

No penalty on this Connor Bedard hit, but Connor Murphy is slapped with a 2-minute roughing penalty. Murphy was laughing in the penalty box. Imagine he thought that was a soft call. #Blackhawks pic.twitter.com/BdQZJsgGqa

    — Charlie Roumeliotis (@CRoumeliotis) February 26, 2025 With all of the penalty kill time in the first, Alex Vlasic had a strong period. He skated 3:46 of his 9:07 short-handed and was credited with two blocked shots and one hit in the opening frame. The Blackhawks young third defensive pair didn’t get a lot of ice time but they were pretty good. Nolan Allan was credited with a team-leading four blocked shots in only 9:14 in the first two periods. Ethan Del Mastro wasn’t credited with any hits or blocked shots but he made a number of solid plays taking away space as well. Del Mastro had a very good game and got a few shifts with Jones in the third period. Philipp Kurashev (0-6) and Connor Bedard (0-5) got shutout at the dot in the first two periods. Thru two periods: 4 hits in 4:42 (seven shifts) for Colton Dach. He also won both of his faceoffs to that point. Frank Nazar had another really good, dynamic game all over the ice. He blocked a couple shots, won five of ten faceoffs and had three shots on net. His speed was once again a difference maker.
