MONROE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A Matthews woman is facing attempted murder and kidnapping charges, accused of locking her boyfriend in a storage unit.
The victim told police he was in the locker for five days with no food or water on Old Charlotte Highway in Monroe.
Police say the man lost his phone inside the storage unit and he finally found it after five days and it still had a charge, so that’s how he got help.
A man calls 911 from this storage facility in Monroe and says he’s been trapped inside for days with no food or water.

“I’ve been locked in a storage unit for about a week now and I just now found my phone,” said the victim on a 911 call Monday afternoon.
“Ok, so you’re locked in a storage unit?” asked the dispatcher.
“Yes, my girlfriend locked me in here. She double-locked my lock, and I don’t know how she put me in here, but she put me in here and I just now found my phone inside this storage unit. I’ve been here since last week,” said the caller.
He tells the dispatcher his phone is about to die.
“I just need out of here, I can’t breathe. I haven’t had nothing to drink or anything,” said the caller.
Police say if you could see inside the storage unit, you’d understand how the man lost his phone in all of the stuff and couldn’t find it for five days.
“The officers did describe the storage unit as being a hoarder’s paradise type situation, so when they opened the door, things started to fall out, the further they opened it, more stuff fell out,” said Lt. Morgan Malone with the Monroe Police Department.
Investigators say the couple got into a fight, and when the woman asked her boyfriend to get something out of the back of the unit, he crawled there, and she shut the door and doubled locked it on him.

“We believe that she truly intended for him to die in that storage unit with no food and no water, no outside source of anything, she knew she locked him in there and never went back to check on him,” said Lt. Malone.
Even though on the 911 call, the victim clearly says that his girlfriend locked him in the unit, he now has a different story.
He told Queen City News Tuesday that she didn’t know he was in there, indicating she didn’t do it on purpose, but police have warrants out for her arrest for attempted murder and kidnapping.
“It sounds bizarre, it really does sound bizarre to everybody, but I think it’s an important reminder that men are also victims of domestic violence, and it has to be taken seriously,” said Lt. Malone.
Police say the victim was dehydrated, and he went to the hospital just to get checked out but was released.
