Union-represented service and patient care workers at University of California campuses and medical centers have announced a two-day strike starting Feb. 26 that will affect nearly 40,000 workers across the state.
UC San Diego Medical Center in La Jolla will be one of seven statewide locations that will experience the largest picket lines, according to the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299 union.
This demonstration will occur at the same time as another strike, organized by the University Professional and Technical Employees Local CWA 9119, set for Feb. 26-28 at all UC facilities.
The AFSCME strike announcement came two weeks after Local 3299 alleged UC has silenced and intimidated workers from speaking out about affordability and staff vacancy crises, according to recent charges with the Public Employment Relations Board.

— AFSCME Local 3299 (@afscme3299) February 25, 2025More than 37,000 contracts for union represented UC workers expired in 2024 and AFSCME has been negotiating successor agreements for over a year, according to a press release.
A 2023 report by Local 3299 stated that frontline service and patient care UC workers made up a majority of the lowest paid UC employees and often could not afford housing near their place of work.
UC is the third largest employer in the state and 24% of its total workforce earned less than $25 per hour, according to the report.
A UC press release stated Friday that both unions have “chosen to focus their energy on strike preparation and amplifying misinformation rather than negotiating in good faith.”
The two unions have been unresponsive, according to the UC statement.
During any potential strike, the University is prepared to make every effort to ensure that critical operations, which include patient care, continue at a level of excellence that UC patients, students, faculty, and staff expect.
— UCOP Newsroom (@UC_Newsroom) February 14, 2025“UPTE, who began strike preparations the same month contract negotiations began, failed to attend the most recent bargaining session and declared an impasse before responding to our offers,” the statement read. “AFSCME has not responded to the University’s proposals or counterproposals since May 2024.”
Public pickets for AFSCME will be held from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Feb. 26-27 at UC’s 10 campuses, five medical centers, clinics, and research laboratories across the state.
