Travel between Canada and the United States is hardly considered really international—in fact, passport requirements were only put in at the border in 2008. But despite the fact that travel between these two borders is a relatively affordable and easy trip, recent uncertainty around tariffs has resulted in 56 per cent of Canadians saying they will no longer travel to the United States for the time being.
So where are budget-conscious Canadians traveling instead of the United States right now? Data at Flight Centre Canada has pinpointed exactly where interest is growing and what Canadian travelers are planning for as they look for alternative holiday destinations.
Vietnam

Despite being quite further of a journey, many Canadians are expressing interest in Vietnam. The research suggests that the country’s incredible food, history, and striking scenery are the biggest draws. Vietnam is also considerably more affordable for budget-conscious travelers than other popular destinations in Southeast Asia like Singapore or Indonesia.
Mexico

Mexico is unsurprisingly topping the list of many Canadians—especially Oaxaca and Guanajuato. The major Canadian cities offer direct flights to many Mexican cities and you can get there in less than six hours in certain cases, which makes it a great option for shorter trips.
Portugal

Portugal has been on the lips of many budget-conscious travelers as of late but despite its surge in popularity, it’s still considered one of Europe’s best value for food, wine, and beautiful scenery. Lisbon and Porto are of particular interest—and direct flights to both cities are available out of Toronto and Montreal.

Türkiye—particularly Istanbul and Cappadocia—is another popular destination for budget-conscious Canadians. The country is significantly more expensive than it was a few years ago due to the country’s inflation, but it’s still going to be the country with the best value for those looking for a serious history lesson and excellent food and hospitality along the way.
Colombia

South America has become a popular option for Canadians looking for a warm-weather getaway that makes it easy to work remotely—and Colombia, especially Cartagena and Medellín, is leading the way. The country is still affordable for travelers and the timezone is the same as Eastern Standard Time which is great for scheduling Zoom meetings or working a 9-to-5 while abroad.
Eastern Europe

Travelers are also showing more interest in Eastern Europe, especially Romania, Poland, and Hungary, where fairytale-esque towns and castles unfold. These countries offer the same level of history and culture as popular destinations in Western Europe but can be more affordable when planned properly.
