Syria welcomes EU suspension of sanctions: a beginning of broader dialogue

In a statement, the ministry explained that the EU'sdecision includes the suspension of sectoral measures in energy, including oil,gas, electricity, and the transport sector. The ministry described the move as"the beginning of a broad dialogue."

"This decision represents a positivedevelopment in alleviating the economic suffering of the Syrian people andsignals progress toward constructive engagement between Syria and theinternational community," the statement read.

    The EU decision also removed five institutionsfrom its sanctions list, including the Industrial Bank, the People's CreditBank, the Savings Bank, the Agricultural Cooperative Bank, and Syrian ArabAirlines. It also eased restrictions on the Syrian central bank.

    Additionally, the ministry noted theintroduction of exemptions to allow financial transactions necessary for energyand transport sectors, humanitarian aid, and reconstruction efforts, alongsidethe indefinite extension of current humanitarian exemptions.

    The ministry reaffirmed its commitment toworking with all countries and parties striving for economic stability anddevelopment, free from collective sanctions and politically motivatedrestrictions.

    During a broad European meeting held inBrussels, EU member states agreed to suspend a range of sanctions on Syria,including those related to energy, transport, and construction sectors.

    The EU also announced on Monday the lifting ofsanctions on the energy and transport sectors, along with four Syrian banks andSyrian Airlines. Restrictions on the Syrian Central Bank were eased, and theindefinite extension of humanitarian aid exemptions was confirmed.

    However, the EU maintained a series ofsanctions related to former President Bashar al-Assad's regime, including thosetargeting arms trade, dual-use goods for military and civilian purposes,surveillance programs, and the international trade of Syrian cultural heritagegoods.

    European ministers emphasized that they wouldcontinue monitoring the situation in Syria to ensure the appropriateness of thesanctions suspension.

    Earlierin the day, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell confirmed the suspension ofsanctions, stating, "We will lift sanctions on energy, transport, andSyrian banks during today's meeting."
