Mohamed Salah Saving the Best for Last? Liverpool Talisman Enjoying an All-Time Great Season

Mohamed Salah is on course for one of the most impressive Premier League seasons of all time, but how many records will he be able to break? We look at the stats behind his exceptional 2024-25 campaign so far.

With uncertainty over his future at Liverpool and the potential that he could walk away from Anfield this summer following the expiration of his contract, Mohamed Salah might be playing in his final Premier League season. If that is the case, then he looks to have saved his best for last.

With yet another goal and assist in Liverpool’s 2-0 away win at reigning champions Manchester City on Sunday, Salah reached 41 goal involvements in the 2024-25 Premier League campaign.

Having plundered 25 goals and 16 assists, Salah’s feat saw him become the first player in Premier League history to enjoy two separate seasons of providing 40+ goal involvements. Assuming he avoids injury, it’s now a matter of when, not if, he breaks his own personal record of 42 recorded in 2017-18 – his first season at the club.

Back then, Salah’s 32 goals and 10 assists were only enough to help Liverpool to fourth in the Premier League table, but now, with an 11-point lead over second-place Arsenal, the Egyptian’s feats look set to bring the Reds their 20th top-flight title, only their second Premier League crown.

His performance at the Etihad Stadium against Man City on 23 February saw him extend yet another record in the Premier League, too. It was the 11th different match of 2024-25 that Salah has both scored and assisted in, taking him four clear of anyone else in a single campaign.

In fact, Salah is the first player to score and assist in 11 different games in one of Europe’s big-five leagues in a single season since Lionel Messi in 2014-15 (11 for Barcelona).

Overall, it was the 42nd game Salah has both scored and assisted in across his Premier League career, another competition benchmark and six more than the previous record holder Wayne Rooney managed (36).

His 41 goal involvements so far in 2024-25 have seen him overtake Sergio Agüero, Thierry Henry, Harry Kane and Andrew Cole in the all-time Premier League rankings, with Salah (267) now just four away from Ryan Giggs in fourth place (271). Alan Shearer unsurprisingly holds the competition record (324), but should Salah sign a new contract at Liverpool and stay beyond this season, then even that could be under threat, with the forward 57 away.

Now sixth in the all-time goal rankings (182) and 10th for assists across the competition’s history (85), Salah is one of only three players to be in the top 10 of both categories in the Premier League alongside Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney.

With 264 of his 267 Premier League goal involvements coming at Liverpool, Salah ranks third in Premier League history for the most goals scored or assisted at a single club behind just Giggs (271) and Rooney (276) at Manchester United. Fourteen of those came in December 2024, which also equalled the most Premier League goal involvements by a single player across a month of action, level with Luis Suárez in December 2013, also at Liverpool.

Given seven of Liverpool’s remaining 11 Premier League games of 2024-25 being played at home, there is every chance Salah will edge closer to breaking another competition record as well. As one of just four players to score 100+ goals in a single stadium in Premier League history thanks to his 101 strikes at Anfield, he is now just 13 away from Henry’s record of netting 114 times at Highbury for Arsenal.

It’s his form on the road that’s been most impressive this season, though. With 27 goal involvements in away games, he’s already six clear of any other player in Premier League history for goals and assists away from home in a single campaign, beating Andrew Cole’s tally of 21 in 1993-94.

Sixteen of those have been goals, with one more needed to become the outright leading scorer away from home in a single season ahead of Harry Kane in 2022-23 for Spurs (16) and Kevin Phillips in 1999-00 for Sunderland (16). He also needs one more assist in Liverpool’s remaining four away games of 2024-25 to top Cesc Fàbregas’ 11 as an away player in 2014-15.

Across all competitions, Sunday’s goal was his 30th of 2024-25. That saw him reach 30 goals in a fifth separate season for Liverpool, equalling the club record shared by Roger Hunt and Ian Rush. It was the eighth successive appearance in which he’d scored for Arne Slot’s side, too – only Salah himself (10 in between August and October 2021) has ever scored in more consecutive appearances for the club in all competitions.

Furthermore, his assist for Dominik Szoboszlai in the win over City was his 21st in all competitions this season, the most in a single season by a Reds’ player since Kenny Dalglish in 1984-85.

Salah’s 241st Liverpool goal saw him go joint third in the all-time Liverpool rankings with Gordon Hodgson, but if he’s to get close to Roger Hunt in second place (285), he’ll need longer than this season.

Only time will tell if he gets the opportunity to do so.
