Gregg Popovich’s Coaching Future Reportedly in Doubt

It’s been a tough week for the San Antonio Spurs.

First, Victor Wembanyama was diagnosed with a blood clot and ruled out for the season. Then, last night, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that head coach Gregg Popovich is unlikely to return this season and that his coaching future beyond this season is “uncertain.” Popovich has been sidelined since early November after suffering a mild stroke.

“Gregg Popovich is not expected to return to the team this season. He is not going to be back. That’s what the Spurs are operating under. His future is clearly under some uncertainty right now. He hasn’t coached since he had that mild stroke in November. He continues to progress in his rehab. From a human perspective, he is getting stronger and stronger. There will be a time and place where he will make determinations and address his long-term future,” Charania said on ESPN.

Gregg Popovich’s Return Is Still Uncertain

The most important nugget of information from Shams Charania’s report is that, while his return is uncertain, Popovich is still progressing well in his rehab. When things like this occur, obviously sports become secondary and the person becomes the primary point of concern.

It was also encouraging to hear that Popovich has been in contact with Victor Wembanyama since his blood clot diagnosis and has been having frequent communication with the star center. While he might not be on the sidelines coaching, clearly Popovich is still attached to the team and is supporting his players despite being in recovery himself.

Hopefully, though, Pop is able to make a full recovery and return to the bench at some point, even if it’s just for a short stint. For a coach as legendary as him and one who’s an icon for not only the Spurs franchise but the NBA as a whole, he deserves a grand send-off before he decides to call it a career. Hopefully, his health and recovery will allow him the opportunity to get one.
