Worrying major update over Gregg Popovich’s future at San Antonio Spurs three months after suffering stroke

GREGG POPOVICH is reportedly set to miss the remainder of the NBA season.

The 76-year-old San Antonio Spurs coach took leave in November after it was revealed he’s suffered a stroke.

Popovich was replaced with assistant Mitch Johnson, who has gone 22-27 as interim head coach.

The veteran suffered what the team called a “mild stroke” ahead of a matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves last fall.

Popovich has coached the Spurs since the 1996-97 season and is the oldest coach in NBA history.

He had been expected to return this season after “attacking his rehab.”

But now Popovich is expected to sit out the remainder of the campaign, according to ESPN.

“No one is more excited to see me return to the bench than the talented individuals who have been leading my rehabilitation process,” Popovich said in a statement last December.

“They’ve quickly learned that I’m less than coachable,” he jokingly added.

The report comes after Spurs star Victor Wembenyama was also ruled out until next season.

San Antonio’s 7ft4 center has been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder.

It is wild to think of the circumstances and the situations that we’ve been through as a team this year,” Spurs point guard Chris Paul said.

“But I think you guys know when situations happen in your family that somehow, someway brings you closer.”

Wembanyama is the reigning Rookie of the Year.

The French sensation has averaged 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 3.7 assists in 46 games this season.

He also leads the NBA in blocks.

Popovich has been in “close contact” with the 20-year-old over the past few days, per Shams Charania.

Losing Wembanyama all but halts the Spurs’ chances of making a run into the NBA playoffs this season.

Sitting at 23-29, San Antonio currently owns the No. 12 seed in the Western Conference.

They would need to jump to the No. 10 seed to even make the Play-In Tournament.
