Over at The Athletic, Jourdan Rodrigue and Mike Jones recently constructed their list of the NFL’s top 50 individuals–non-players–who are under 40 years old. On that list are now three members of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ new leadership structure.
Representing the Jaguars are head coach Liam Coen (39), general manager James Gladstone (34), and offensive coordinator Grant Udinski (29).
I’ll also point out that defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile is just 42 years old as well.
In addition to the young staff that the Jaguars have constructed each of these individuals will also be in their respective roles for the first time in their NFL careers.
With that certainly comes some unknowns and, while not an excuse, this is something the Jaguars will have to navigate this season. Like anything, a learning curve–although to what degree we don’t know–should be expected.
However, having said that, by age, this is a very young staff that the Jaguars have put together. But this group has its share of experience as well in regards to the previous roles they’ve filled, the brilliant minds they’ve been around, the schemes and structures they’ve worked in, and tasks they’ve handled.
And oftentimes with “youth,” you get energy and fresh ideas that can be implemented throughout how the organization goes about its business.
“I would say we have an energetic staff for sure,” Udinski said. “So, maybe that’s how I would look at it there, but in the sense of youth, I think you feel the energy, the excitement, the passion for football, for coaching, and the work that goes into making this thing ultimately what we want it to be.
“I think that carries over not only into our interactions with each other so far, but I think that will show up in our relationships with the players and the relationships, hopefully, with everyone else in the building. So I think the energy is palpable.”
With Coen, Udinski, and Gladstone all being new to their respective roles, there is some risk in that. But there’s also a ton of upside and potential as well.
