Former Rams’ Director of scouting and strategy James Gladstone is now the new Jacksonville Jaguars’ general manager. So with that connection between the Rams and Jaguars now further established, who are some of LA’s notable free agents this offseason?
Gladstone isn’t the only Rams or Sean McVay presence in the Jaguars’ organization. Liam Coen spent two years working under McVay as the offensive coordinator, and current Jaguars’ offensive coordinator Grant Udinski worked closely with Minnesota’s Kevin O’Connell, who is also a former McVay offensive coordinator.
Those connections can lead to similar philosophies when it comes to roster building and schematically as well. And with that, there is then the potential for some Rams’ free agents to fit well with what the Jaguars are building and want to accomplish under their new leadership structure.
But before we get to who some of the Rams’ top free agents are, we also have to mention that Cooper Kupp is available for trade as well.
Kupp was an All-Pro during the Rams 2021 Super Bowl season, which included him leading the NFL in receptions (145), yards (1,947), and touchdowns (16).
The last three years, however, Kupp has navigated injuries, playing in 33 out of a possible 51 games. But he’s remained highly effective.
In just nine games in 2022, Kupp had 812 receiving yards. In 2023, playing in 12 games, he had 737 yards, and in 12 games this past year, Kupp had 710 receiving yards.
To acquire Kupp, the Jaguars would, of course, have to part with draft capital, which they have a good amount of this year with 10 selections.
They would also have to take on a $12.5 million cap hit in 2025, according to Over the cap, if the Rams pick up Kupp’s roster bonus. But if LA doesn’t Kupp’s cap hit this year is $20 million. In the 2026 season, the final year of Kupp’s deal, there is no real cap impact that year with no guarantees remaining at that point.
If the Jaguars made this trade, there would also have to likely be a corresponding roster move with Christian Kirk, since both players often line up in the slot. Of note, if the Jaguars were to move on from Kirk this offseason, the would create an additional $10.43 million in cap space.
Now, on to the free agents. With help from Over the Cap, here are some of the Rams’ notable free agents this offseason:
LT Alaric Jackson: With Walker Little having just signed an extension and Anton Harrison still on his rookie deal, the Jaguars probably aren’t going to offer Jackson a big day this offseason. This past season, Jackson allowed three sacks and 25 pressures. He graded out well as both a run-blocker and pass-blocker by PFF’s metrics.
WR Demarcus Robinson: A boundary wideout, Robinson had a career year in 2024, totaling 602 receiving yards, seven touchdowns, and did so at a whopping 17.2 yards per catch.
LB Christian Rozeboom: Rozeboom was a sound tackler this past season and in coverage allowed 11.7 yards per catch with a 78% completion rate, along with one interception and three pass breakups. He graded out so-so as a run defender.
DE Michael Hoecht: Over the last two seasons, Hoecht has totaled 73 pressures and 12 sacks. By PFF’s metrics, he improved fairly significantly as a run defender in 2024.
CB Ahkello Witherspoon: An experienced option at cornerback, Witherspoon’s career completion rate is just 57%, although it jumped to 69% in 2024. He allowed 12.1 yards per catch this past season and had one interception with six pass breakups.
IDL Bobby Brown III: Brown tallied just three pressures this season but was more so used on running downs. He’s graded out as an above-average run defender in his career.
WR Tutu Atwell: A player who lines up both out wide and in the slot often, Atwell totaled 521 receiving yards in 2023 and 580 yards this past season, averaging 13.3 yards per catch with four touchdowns during that span.
TE Hunter Long: Long has often been used as a blocker, where he’s graded out quite well. The Jaguars need depth at tight end and with the run game being an important part of Liam Coen’s offense, look for them to emphasize blocking.
OT Joe Noteboom: An experienced player overall, Noteboom could provide some veteran depth at a position–the offensive line–where the Jaguars need improved play.
QB Jimmy Garoppolo: With the Jaguars needing to find a backup quarterback option, Garoppolo could provide a veteran presence behind Trevor Lawrence as someone who has operated in a similar scheme to what Coen will run.
