Following the announcement, Jaguars’ owner Shad Khan released this statement:
“It’s my honor to introduce James Gladstone as the new general manager of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
“James emerged as my choice, and our choice, following a painstaking but energizing interview process that left nothing to doubt. Every candidate delivered, and I am grateful to them all for their preparation and time spent with us this week in Jacksonville. In the end, we found James to be a class ahead and exceptional in every regard – vision, new ideas, communication, chemistry and a keen understanding of the league and our team, to name a few of many virtues he will bring immediately to the Jaguars. It’s going to be fun watching James work with our football leadership team of Liam Coen, Tony Boselli and Tony Khan, but most of all it will be rewarding. I am confident of that.
“This is also an occasion to thank Jaguars fans everywhere for their support and faith over the years. I know we can count on them to warmly welcome James to Duval while rallying behind our organization and team as we chart a new and promising path forward.”
Gladstone has been with the Rams for eight seasons now and has been the Director of Scouting Strategy for the last four seasons.
He has worked closely with Rams’ GM Les Snead, and played a key role in the team’s draft process, an area where LA has found quite a bit of success, even with at times, limited draft picks.
In that four-year span, the Rams organization has finished with a combined record of 37-31, which includes three 10-plus win seasons, three playoff appearances, and a Super Bowl win, hitting on a number of draft picks and often operating aggressively in free agency.
The addition of Gladstone is the latest Sean McVay fingerprint that is now apart of the Jaguars’ organization. Liam Coen, who spent two seasons under McVay, considers himself apart of that coaching tree, while offensive coordinator Grant Udinski worked under Kevin O’Connell, who was McVay’s offensive coordinator before becoming the Vikings’ head coach.
During his introductory press conference, Liam Coen emphasized the importance of alignment between the general manager and the head coach when it comes to building a successful roster.
“With the front office, how do we continue to build there and get this thing fully in alignment so that then when we go into the offseason program, we’re all on the same page, we all understand the vision and the goal,” Coen said.
The trio of Executive Vice President Tony Boselli, head coach Liam Coen and the Gladstone will for the “football leadership unit,” and will work together on “major football decisions, develop a long-term strategy for sustainable on-field success, and provide counsel to the team owner.”
