Canada reacts to historic hockey win in 4 Nations face-off

It’s a great day to be Canadian! The country’s national hockey team secured a historic victory over the U.S. in Boston on Thursday night to become 4 Nations champions, and Canadians from far and wide are reacting.

Team Canada lifted the coveted trophy thanks to an epic game-winning shot from Toronto-born Connor McDavid about eight minutes into overtime.

The victory instilled a renewed sense of patriotism across Canada as it traverses a fragile political landscape with its storied ally to the south.

U.S. President Donald Trump has made repeated digs at Canada’s sovereignty since assuming office, often referring to it as America’s “51st state” and employing the misnomer “Governor” Trudeau instead of Prime Minister.

There has been no word from President Trump since Canada won, however, he did share a message on Truth Social before the final, where he confirmed that he spoke with American team.

‘I’ll be calling our GREAT American Hockey Team this morning to spur them on towards victory tonight against Canada, which with FAR LOWER TAXES AND MUCH STRONGER SECURITY, will someday, maybe soon, become our cherished, and very important, Fifty First State,” he wrote.

“I will be speaking before the Governors tonight in D.C., and will sadly, therefore, be unable to attend. But we will all be watching, and if Governor Trudeau would like to join us, he would be most welcome,” he concluded.

In recent weeks, professional sports games between American and Canadian teams have become increasingly hostile, with fans from both sides of the border booing over “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “O Canada” respectively.

While spectators largely withheld their boos during Thursday night’s game, it was peppered with subtle protests against Trump’s rhetoric.

During Canada’s national anthem, Canadian Grammy-award winning singer Chantal Kreviazuk switched the lyrics of “O Canada.”

Instead of singing “in all of us command,” Kreviazuk intentionally sang “that only us command,” CBC confirmed.

In addition, shortly after the win, Justin Trudeau posted a celebratory video on Instagram with the caption “You can’t take our country — and you can’t take our game.

In the video, the prime minister is seen cheering and celebrating among friends while embracing fellow hockey fans.

More of Canada’s leaders shared their congratulations online.

“Canada’s game. Canada’s legacy. The true North, strong, free and golden,” Pierre Poilievre wrote on X, alongside footage of team Canada’s ascent to the top.

Ontario premier Doug Ford also took to social media to commend the win.

“Way to go Team Canada! Congratulations on your incredible win. You’ve made our country proud,” he wrote.

B.C Premier David Eby, shared a similar message.

Canadians have also been reacting online, with some seizing the opportunity to hit back at his recent remarks.

“Tell Trump they can be the 11th province,” one Canadian fan wrote on Instagram.

“WE AIN’T NOBODY’S 51st STATE!!!,” another user said.

Others expressed their elation over Canada’s welcomed win.

‘We needed this!!,” one fan wrote.

Some Americans also shared their support for Canada.

“We were cheering Canada on from Nashville. What a game! What a moment!,” a fan commented.

“Even some of us US peeps were cheering for you!,” another user said.
