Top 5 Detroit Lions Free Agent Targets

Fresh off a strong season, the Detroit Lions are looking to build on their momentum and take the next step toward Super Bowl contention. With key areas to address on both sides of the ball, smart moves in free agency could make all the difference. Here are the top five free agents the Lions should target this offseason.

Top 5 Detroit Lions Free Agent Targets

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff (16) waits in the tunnel with the offense before the start of the Thursday Night Football game against Division rivals Green Bay Packers at Ford Field in Detroit on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2024.

1. Trey Smith — G, Kansas City Chiefs

The Detroit Lions have roughly $46 million in available cap space and should be spending to win a Super Bowl. Trey Smith is the top offensive lineman projected to hit the open market this offseason, and he’s been a consistent (and improving) producer for the Kansas City Chiefs in recent seasons.

Smith’s 78.8 PFF overall grade in the regular season ranked 11th among all guards, and he will still be only 25 when free agency opens. Smith is a high-floor, long-term investment that makes sense for a team with a healthy amount of cap space to deploy this offseason.

    2. Josh Sweat — EDGE, Philadelphia Eagles

The Lions need to add an edge rusher, and Josh Sweat, at 28 years old, is a long-term option that could help Detroit bolster its pass rush and serve as a long-term building block for that unit. Sweat was a steady producer in Philadelphia under multiple defensive coordinators and was a wrecking ball for the Eagles in their Super Bowl victory over the Kansas City Chiefs earlier this month.

    3. Khalil Mack — EDGE, Los Angeles Chargers

If Detroit doesn’t land Josh Sweat, veteran Khalil Mack is a perfect bridge option for Detroit after turning in back-to-back tremendous seasons with the Chargers under two different coaching staffs. If Sweat doesn’t pan out, Mack could provide the Lions with a bridge option there.

    4. Drew Dalman — C, Atlanta Falcons

Atlanta’s Drew Dalman could hit the market next month, and he’s a no-brainer, ranking as one of the league’s best centers in the past two seasons. According to PFF, Dalman’s 78.8 PFF overall grade ranked fourth among centers in 2024, and his 82.3 overall grade in 2023 ranked third among centers. Dalman has room to grow as a pass-blocker but is one of the league’s best run-blocking centers and is only 26 years old.

    5. Carlton Davis III — CB, Detroit Lions

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers dealt Davis to the Lions in the offseason, and he quickly became a stabilizing force for Detroit’s young secondary, which desperately needed help following a rash of injuries in 2024—most notably to Defensive Player of the Year front-runner Aidan Hutchinson. However, Davis also fell victim to the injury bug, suffering a fractured jaw in Week 15 that prematurely ended his season. Re-signing Davis should be a top priority for the Lions.
