On Wednesday we learned that the Blackhawks and Seth Jones are chatting about the possibility of finding him a new home.
This isn’t going to be an easy proposition, but it is far from impossible. Again, with the NHL’s salary cap going up significantly in the coming years and Jones being a big, right-handed defenseman who can skate 23-25 minutes per night, teams will answer the phone on the player. And, contrary to what many Blackhawks fans want to believe, the Hawks might not have to retain a lot of salary to get something done.
I wouldn't be surprised if CHI can get this done with not much retention thanks to salary cap inflation. t.co/D4dqnHlsF1 pic.twitter.com/gx6GXq1nfA
— JFresh (@JFreshHockey) February 20, 2025So let’s talk about potential landing spots for Jones if the Blackhawks are able to find a trading partner before the March 7 NHL trade deadline. Here are four teams that might be able and willing to make a move for Jones during the current season and have it work for them into the future without the Blackhawks retaining much money in the deal.
Note: the draft pick graphics are from PuckPedia.
Colorado Avalanche
Sean Keeler at The Denver Post wrote a solid column this week in which he outlines the Avs needs, and it starts with a defenseman (or two) and improved center options. They currently have roughly $4.76M in cap space. But that’s… tricky.
The Blackhawks already did the Avs a solid this season when they ate half of Mikko Rantanen’s contract. Colorado wanted/needed to retain cap space for later in case they needed to make another move… or if their captain, Gabriel Landeskog, is able to return after almost two years away from the game because of injury. Keeler writes that they need clarity on whether or not Landeskog can/will come back before the end of the regular season because they might need to move someone out to make room for him without adding anything.
With the Avs potentially looking to add multiple pieces, this could be another complicated deal; they’re already playing with LTIR money. They haven’t been thrilled with Casey Mittelstadt (who is signed for two more years with a $5.75M cap hit after this season) and might be open to moving veteran defenseman Josh Manson (who has one more year at a $4.5M cap hit after this season).
Dallas Stars
Dallas has a shave under $4.6M in cap space to play with at the deadline with Tyler Seguin on LTIR. Like the Avs, they’re chasing Winnipeg in the Central Division but feel they have the core horses to make a big run into the postseason. But they might need a final piece or two.
The Stars could look at the longer term and, if Jamie Benn (and his $9.5M cap hit) retires after this season, see an easy fit under the cap for Jones at full contract value without hurting themselves too much. Seguin’s future is in question with his injury and two years left on his current deal; he might be an LTIR candidate next year.
The Blackhawks might need to take the contract of at least Matt Dumba or Ilya Lyubushkin back in a deal.
Boston Bruins
Boston’s next couple weeks will go a long way in determining how much they want to buy or sell before the deadline.
The Bruins desperately needed help on the blue line with Hampus Lindholm on LTIR before the 4 Nations Face-Off. Then Charlie McAvoy having his issues that have him out “week-to-week” means Boston is now out of their top two defensemen. Which makes it hard to imagine they could make a run at anything this year.
Boston has reportedly been open to moving center Trent Frederic ($2.3M, UFA this summer) and have two right-handed defensemen, Brandon Carlo and Andrew Peeke, with term after the 2024-25 season on their contracts that might be part of a conversation.
Philadelphia Flyers
The Flyers are closer to the playoffs than the Blackhawks in their rebuild timeline (theirs was more of a retool) and they have a little over $6.2M in available cap space before the deadline. They have some young forwards and defensemen coming. They could use a big right-shot defenseman to eat 23-24 minutes per night. Philly hoped Jamie Drysdale would be a guy but… yeah.
Drysdale has one more year at $2.3M on his contract. There might be another intriguing player or two (cough, Scott Laughton, cough) who might make this a more intriguing conversation for both the Flyers and Blackhawks. From a next 3-5 years perspective, Philly might be in a better position to add an impact defenseman like Jones to their lineup.
