Mindy Kaling wants to set the record straight about Meghan Markle.
The former Office star, 45, is the showrunner on the new Netflix show Running Point, which debuts on Feb. 27. But that’s not all. Kaling also appears on Meghan Markle’s forthcoming Netflix show, With Love, Meghan, and gained some new insight into the Dutchess of Sussex.
"I think a misconception about Meghan is that she’s in any way fussy or has expectations of fanciness," Kaling told Time about the former royal she calls a friend. “She really is a down-to-earth person who knows a lot of fun tricks to make entertaining and cooking easier.”

In the interview, Kaling went on to explain how she ended up on Markle’s new show and talked the pair’s blossoming friendship.
“I was on maternity leave with my daughter in March and April, and Meghan texted me that she was doing a show where she was going to cook for her friends,” Kaling revealed. “Would I want to come to Montecito and have her cook for me? I wanted to get taken care of in that moment of my life. That was a fun maternity leave field trip.”
Aside from the good company, Kaling came home with some special gifts courtesy of Markle. “I left with a basket of fresh produce and homemade jam and hot sauce because she knew I loved hot sauce,” Kaling added. “She’s a very generous woman who knew I needed a break.”
During their get-together, Kaling also received some special knowledge from Markle. “I love cooking, but I’m really not good at entertaining. I don’t know anything about how you’re not supposed to use overhead lighting when people come over. You’re supposed to use little lamps,” Kaling admitted. “But Meghan just knows how to do that stuff. For kids’ parties I usually just go to the party supply store and get paper things, which I don’t judge and neither does she. But it was fun to learn simple ways to do a homemade kids’ party.”
In the trailer for the show, Markle cuts and plates a freshly made strawberry shortcake, while Kaling exclaims, “What?! This is probably one of the most glamorous moments of my life.”
With Love, Meghan premieres March 4 on Netflix.
