DENVER (KDVR) -- The jury has convicted former Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office deputy Andrew Buen, who killed 22-year-old Christian Glass in 2022.
The jury on Thursday found Buen guilty of criminally negligent homicide. In his first trial, Buen was found guilty of reckless endangerment, but the jury was deadlocked on the charges of second-degree murder and homicide.
Closing arguments took place Wednesday in the second-degree murder retrial, in which defense attorneys said deputies were trying to get Glass out of the car for a mental health hold. They say he did not respond to demands, so they broke his car window and shot him with bean bag rounds and a taser.
Prosecutors, however, said Glass was afraid and needed help.
Prosecutor Joe Kirwan said Glass was not a threat to anyone and tried to convey that to Buen.
“Christian volunteered to throw out whatever a police officer was afraid of, knives, and he wouldn’t let him. This would never have happened if he had just done what Christian offered to do,” Kirwan told the jury.
Glass had originally called 911 for help after his car got stuck in Silver Plume, told dispatchers he had a hammer and knives and offered to throw them out the window.
