Patrick Williams Out Multiple Weeks with Injury, Bulls Announce

The Chicago Bulls announced that Patrick Williams will miss at least two weeks with a knee injury.

Williams received a PRP (platelet rich plasma) injection in his right knee to treat tendinosis, per the team. The news comes after the Bulls ruled out Williams on Wednesday for their meeting with the New York Knicks on Thursday night at Madison Square Garden. The injury report initially stated “Right QuadricepTendon Soreness” as the issue.

Patrick Williams to Miss At Least Two Weeks

As always, it’s important to note that the use of “re-evaluated” suggests that Williams could miss more than just two weeks of action. Not only might he need time to ramp back up, but the Bulls are presumably not certain that the injury will be fully healed during that time.

Nevertheless, this two-week timetable means that Williams will miss at least eight of the Chicago Bulls’ final 27 games of the season. This will be the second extended absence for the 23-year-old this season, as he experienced foot inflammation that forced him to miss 10 games in November and December.

The injury only dampens what has already been a woeful season for the young forward. After shockingly handing Williams a five-year, $90.0 million extension, the former No. 4 overall pick has primarily regressed. He ultimately lost his starting spot at the end of January and has averaged a mere 9.1 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game. Williams is also shooting a career-low 37.5 percent from the field this season. While he was able to string together a promising stretch of five-straight double-digit games following his benching, he entered the All-Star break scoring 8 or fewer points in four consecutive contests.

Despite the lackluster play, Williams’ absence will still only make life harder for Billy Donovan and his coaching staff. The Bulls are an extremely undersized roster and Williams was a go-to source in matchups against more physically imposing wings. With the team also waiving Torrey Craig, they are left with extremely few options at the four. Might Billy Donovan be forced to try out two big lineups? For what it’s worth, both Zach Collins and Jalen Smith have NBA experience at the four.

If one thing is for sure, Williams’ injury means we can expect to see even more of rookie Matas Buzelis, who already leapfrogged him in the rotation due to his strong play. Julian Phillips will also likely re-enter the mix after struggling to get some playing time in recent weeks. Regardless, for a team that has struggled defending the paint and crashing the glass, losing Williams is only going to make their life harder.
