Kroger brags about shopping service but frustrated customers speak out over ‘fake deals’ and refund issues

KROGER has updated one of its popular services to provide even more benefits to consumers.

It comes over about four years after the retailer brought the perk to customers for the first time.

Starting in 2021, customers at stores nationwide were able to get Kroger Delivery Now through Instacart.

Kroger promised a 30-minute drop-off process after customers selected merchandise from a virtual convenience store with a relatively limited selection of merchandise.

Now, that’s been expanded to include items the whole store through what’s called Kroger Express Delivery, per a news release.

Those customers who make orders through the service will get items in less than two hours at their doorstep, or so Kroger says.

“Whether you need an item or two to get dinner on the table quickly between homework and bedtime, forgot the candles for a birthday cake or your game day party ran out of chips just before kickoff, Express Delivery has it covered when you need something and you need it fast,” emphasized Kenneth Perkins, senior director of commerce, strategy, planning and operations for Kroger.

Additionally, Kroger said that non-express delivery is still free for members of Boost through Kroger Plus, its loyalty program with a $99 annual fee.

Pickup orders are still free of fees if they’re over $35.

Kroger also noted in the release that delivery is an increasingly popular part of the business for the chain, increasing by 18% year over year.

It noted that delivery services help customers get identical “prices, savings, and rewards” as if they were shopping in-store.

    MIXED UP

Despite this vote of confidence from Kroger, some shoppers aren’t as confident they’re getting the promised benefits.

For example, a frustrated customer, Bree, recently claimed that despite her support of Kroger Delivery for several months, a recent mishap made her decide to never use the service again.

“You are welcome…to whomever received my Kroger delivery today!” Bree wrote in a Facebook post earlier in February.

“Apparently someone needed it more than we did. I have been a huge supporter of Kroger delivery for months now with no issues at all.”

“I guess all good things must come to an end,” she fumed.

Shoppers can pay $6.95 for delivery within two hours.

Those who need something quicker can get items in as little as 30 minutes.

Orders must be a minimum of $10 to get quicker delivery.

    DEAL DENIED

Another peeved Kroger shopper, Toni, claimed in a separate Facebook post that she wasn’t given the “flash deal” advertised for a delivery order last month.

Toni explained that the deal had advertised a whole turkey at 49 cents per pound, but got her receipt and found she was charged $1.89 per pound instead.

After calling Kroger customer service, she was informed that the flash deal had expired before the order.

“So I put in an order for the FOLLOWING day and they offer me a fake deal that they know will not benefit me? Toni asked, confused.

“The amount of anger I had was irrational (I felt tricked) but I said in a somewhat nice voice to the innocent customer service lady that it was BULLS**T.”

Kroger ultimately provided Toni with a $20 credit for the misunderstanding about the flash deal.

Still, Bree and Toni aren’t alone in their complaints over Kroger Delivery in recent months.

Another customer demanded Kroger “do better” after two crucial delivery mistakes left them with a “mess.”

Kroger also apologized last month after “failing” a shopper’s first time using the delivery benefit with an hour-long wait.
