UNUSED merchandise to commemorate the Kansas City Chiefs winning the Super Bowl has been shipped to Ukraine.
The Chiefs were unable to beat the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans to get their hands on a recording break third crown in a row.
But the team had already printed items like t-shirts, hats and sweatshirts in the hope of celebrating the three-peat.
The 40-22 defeat meant the stock is now unwanted and would seemingly be thrown into the trash.
But reports from The Kansas City Star claim the NFL have teamed-up with charity Good360 to give the clothes an unexpected new life.
The non-profit organisation has supposedly been donated the items and they are set to distribute them to people in need across Europe, Africa and Asia.
Good360 are understood to be sending some of the clothing to war-torn Ukraine amid the attempted invasion from Russia.
They said on their website: “The losers’ gear is closely guarded as it makes its way from the stadium to a central location in preparation for distribution.
“Good360 will work closely with international NGOs to ensure that the apparel goes directly into the hands of the right communities and not some place where someone might be able to profit from it.
“We also take pains to avoid sending the apparel to a location where a flood of donated clothing could disrupt the local economy.
“While the quantity of unusable apparel is only a few thousand items each year, these global sporting events offer a high-profile opportunity to focus attention on sustainability and the benefits of product philanthropy.”
The charity did not confirm whether they were involved in the Super Bowl this year but have taken unused clothing from the NFL final for the last nine years.
They also work with Major League Baseball to do the same at the end of the World Series.
Good360’s statement continued: “For the fortunate few who do end up with this unique attire, it’s a much appreciated donation of clothes that they didn’t need to buy.
“They may not know what the logos on the t-shirts and hats mean, but they do know high-quality apparel when they see it.
“For the losing Super Bowl team, it’s a bittersweet consolation prize knowing that their loss is helping to support people in need and preventing waste.”
The good cause launched in 1983 and they aim to “close the need gap”.
They say: “We know there’s more than enough to go around. That’s why we work to get donated goods to where they can do the most good.”
