Shafaq News/ The US Department ofHealth and Human Services (HHS) issued guidance on Wednesday updating itsofficial definitions of terms such as sex, female, and male, followingexecutive orders by President Donald Trump that restrict transgender rights.
The guidance reinforces the Trumpadministration's position that male and female are the only two sexes and areunchangeable, marking one of the first measures taken by Robert F. Kennedy Jr.since his confirmation last week as Secretary of Health and Human Services.
"This administration isbringing back common sense and restoring biological truth to the federalgovernment," Kennedy noted. "The prior administration's policy oftrying to engineer gender ideology into every aspect of public life isover."
The US President claims thegovernment has been promoting "gender ideology," a vague term oftenused by conservative groups to describe beliefs that challenge traditionalviews on sex and gender. Rights activists, however, see it as an anti-LGBTQtrope that dehumanizes individuals.
In recent years, transgender rightshave sparked political controversy, with several Republicans campaigning duringNovember's elections to roll back transgender-related laws.
Since assuming office, Trump hasissued multiple executive orders that reversed policies aimed at promotingracial equity and protecting LGBTQ+ rights.
Wednesday’s guidance defines a femaleas "a person of the sex characterized by a reproductive system with thebiological function of producing eggs" and a male as "a person of thesex characterized by a reproductive system with the biological function ofproducing sperm."
"The sex of a human, female ormale, is determined genetically at conception (fertilization), and isobservable before birth.”
The Health Department alsoacknowledged its adherence to another Trump order by implementing measures toprevent the "chemical and surgical mutilation" of children, referringto gender-affirming treatments such as puberty-blocking medication, hormones,and, in some cases, surgery.
