Organizers from the Students’ Civil Liberties Union and other affiliated organizations at UC UC San Diego on Wednesday will march in protest of government actions against undocumented immigrants.
Students plan to protest the federal government’s policy on mass deportations and “unchecked powers granted to federal immigration agencies” and “the dangerous practices of ethnic profiling associated with raids conducted by these agencies,” according to a statement by the activists, which cited Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the U.S. Border Patrol as examples.
The students have demanded that the university divest from corporations that maintain contracts with ICE, such as General Dynamics and Aramark and provide more resources to its Undocumented Student Services Center.
“These companies are involved in creating the detention centers and deportation airlines,” said Aryan Dixit, director of external affairs at the civil liberties union. “[This] is why we need to divest to reaffirm and show our support to our undocumented student community. So we are not inviting people who are trying to threaten our community onto campus and to use our resources.”
Dannie Zhu, an international senator at SCLU, added that “the university should be a crucial part in supporting [undocumented] students through providing mental health or counseling resources.”
Students plan a march on the UC San Diego campus, then will appear at the Associated Students Senate.
