DOGE stimulus checks? Musk says he will check with the president

(KRON) -- Elon Musk said he will check with President Donald Trump about the possibility of sending $8,000 "DOGE stimulus" checks to Americans. Musk, an unelected private citizen with no official role in government, has nonetheless been spearheading Trump's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Although not an official agency of the government, DOGE's stated goal is to cut $2 trillion from the federal budget. Of that $2 trillion, Azoria CEO James Fishback has floated that 20% of that money -- about $400 billion -- be allocated as rebates for taxpayers.

That would amount to approximately $5,000 for each of the 79 million tax-paying households in the U.S., which Fishback calls "DOGE Dividends."

Musk, while not elaborating, said he "Will check with the President" in a tweeted response to Fishback's X post. A TikTok post that has since gone viral has suggested the payments could be as high as $8,000.

Thus far, DOGE has cut nowhere near $2 trillion from the federal budget. According to the DOGE Live Tracker, it has currently cut around $55 billion.

There has been no official indication from Trump or anyone in his administration that DOGE stimulus checks will be issued. Economists seem leery of the idea.

Alex Beene, financial literary instructor for the University of Tennessee at Martin, told Newsweek, "The unfortunate reality is odds of checks being sent out are fairly low. Even with the potential savings of recent cuts, stimulus checks are an incredibly expensive endeavor for a government already deeply in debt and facing no pandemic-level emergency to undertake."

"Absolutely not -- and it wouldn't be good for the economy," said financial expert Kevin Thompson, founder and CEO of 9i Capital, also speaking to Newsweek. "If people thought inflation was bad last year and prices are still stubbornly high now, imagine what would happen if we pumped even more money into the system."
