The Jacksonville Jaguars are holding their second round of interviews for their general manager vacancy this week.
The five finalists include:
Ian Cunningham
John-Eric Sullivan
Ethan Waugh
James Gladstone
Josh Williams
Obviously, before the Jaguars can consider assistant GM options, they have to first fill the GM opening. But Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer recently mentioned one name for the assistant GM role for the Jaguars: former New York Jets’ GM Joe Douglas.
In his latest ‘Takeaways’ article, where Breer empties his notebook, he makes note that the Jaguars’ are going young with their new organizational structure. Breer adds that of the four outside candidates interviewing, only two have even been an assistant GM before.
So his point, in mentioning Douglas, is that bringing on someone with experience to fill the assistant GM role could provide the Jaguars’ next GM someone to lean on who’s been in that role before.
When it comes to why Douglas’ name was brought up, Breer mentioned him in connection with Ian Cunningham. Both worked in the Baltimore and Philadelphia organizations at the same time in their careers.
“It wouldn’t, for example, be surprising to see Cunningham bring someone like ex-Jets GM Joe Douglas with him to Jacksonville to add some on-the-job experience to the room,” wrote Breer. “For the franchise’s sake, I hope the new regime has a few moves like that coming.”
Douglas then went on to be the Jets’ GM from 2019-2024. The Jets would go 32-68 during that span and Douglas was fired after Week 11 of the 2024 season.
This is just an example of how the Jaguars could continue to fill out their executive staff and not a report. Although, prior to the Jaguars naming their five finalists, in a separate article, Breer did mention Cunningham as a name to watch.
