Late in the winter window, AC Milan strengthened their squad with the signing of Santiago Gimenez. 

The deal had two benefits for the Rossoneri. Firstly, it provided them with the services of a talented forward who had been enjoying an excellent season at his former club.

Secondly, it weakened their upcoming opponents in the Champions League play-offs. That is right: before he moved to San Siro, Gimenez plied his trade for Feyenoord.

No matter. The Dutch outfit brushed themselves down and remained focused on the task at hand. In the first leg of this tie, they beat Milan and Gimenez 1-0. 

Igor Paixao gave Feyenoord the lead in the third minute at De Kuip after a major error from Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan. Both teams had half-chances thereafter, but it was a rather cagey encounter overall.

Given they had already established a lead, that suited Feyenoord more than it did Milan. In truth, the Italian team’s attempts to get back into the game were pretty feeble. They must do much more in the return fixture on Tuesday.

“This is how you win games, with mentality,” Milan boss Sergio Conceicao said after the game. “They had something more, even with the atmosphere. We had some chances to equalise. It’s all still open – there’s the second leg on Tuesday.”

It was quite a damning comment. You do not hear managers openly criticise their team’s mentality very often. Conceicao, who has only been in the job for a month and a half, obviously felt he needed to vocalise what was on his mind.

He will now be looking for a response in the second leg. Gimenez notched the only goal of the game as Milan beat Hellas Verona on Saturday. Despite the slender scoreline, the Rossoneri dominated the match to move within five points of the top four in Serie A. It was just what they needed.

Feyenoord manager Pascal Bosschaart was full of praise for his team’s performance in the first instalment of this play-off.

“The players showed once again they know how to play football. I really hope we can progress; I am very happy and very proud,” he told the media.

However, a 1-0 home win was a better result under the away goals rule than it is today. This tie feels evenly balanced.

Feyenoord to qualify

Feyenoord are not having a great season in the Eredivisie. After a 0-0 draw with NAC Breda at the weekend, they have now won just one of their last six league games.

Currently fourth, they have a fight on their hands to secure the third-place finish that would send them into the Champions League qualifiers next term.

Meanwhile they were inconsistent in the league phase of this competition, beating Bayern Munich 3-0 a week before losing 6-1 to Lille.

You never know which version of Feyenoord will turn up, but the same could be said of AC Milan.

It is hard to avoid the feeling that the bookies are overpricing Feyenoord given Milan’s historic superiority. It will be close, but at these attractive odds it is worth backing Bosschaart’s boys to go through.

For AC Milan, there is no ambiguity. Anything less than a win on Tuesday would send the seven-time Champions League winners packing. 

Feyenoord’s position is more favourable but their task is more complex. Should they attempt to play for a draw but risk inviting Milan onto them? Or should they look to play on the front foot as much as possible but risk leaving space in behind?

It will be up to Bosschaart to strike the right balance, but an open game surely favours Milan given the attacking quality at their disposal.

Feyenoord should therefore focus on keeping things tight at the back. If they can successfully repel Milan for the first 30 minutes or so, the San Siro crowd could grow restless.

Expect another tight meeting between this pair.

Similar to the above, Feyenoord must aim to keep the back door shut early on. 

If AC Milan were to wipe out the aggregate deficit inside the first 15 minutes, they would be even stronger favourites to qualify.

Feyenoord kept a clean sheet in the first leg, so we know they have what it takes to frustrate Milan. 

Needless to say, shutting the hosts out at San Siro is a much bigger ask, but it is worth noting that six of Milan’s 13 Serie A matches this term have been level at the break.

As much as his side needs a win, Conceicao will encourage control and patience. All things considered, this looks like a good value pick to round off your betslip.
