LSU basketball is not expected to make a head coaching change this season in spite of another disappointing performance for the Tigers.
According to a report from Shea Dixon with On3 Sports, LSU is expected to retain head coach Matt McMahon following the end of the season. The Tigers are 13-12 overall and just 2-10 in the SEC, recently beating Oklahoma to snap a 7-game losing streak.
Dixon also reports that LSU plans to increase its focus on building the NIL budget for the basketball program. The Tigers were reportedly among the lowest spenders in the SEC, and the results back that up.
New: LSU is backing Matt McMahon with a focus on building basketball's NIL budget, sources tell me.LSU + South Carolina had the least NIL money in the offseason. Both are at the bottom of the SEC standings. My story on LSU's approach + what's next:➡️ t.co/KLVJVBwauP pic.twitter.com/NUMrkCMrSp

According to Scott Rabalais with The Advocate, McMahon says he has always been appreciative of the support he’s received at LSU. He also says he has realized the importance of the transfer portal in this era:
“I’ve always been appreciative of the support we’ve had here. I’m excited about our class coming in and realize how important the transfer portal is now,” said McMahon.
Matt McMahon reacts to report that #LSU will back him and expand NIL budget: I've always been appreciative of the support we've had here. I'm excited about our class coming in and realize how important the transfer portal is now.
— Scott Rabalais (@RabalaisAdv) February 17, 2025LSU’s struggles are only magnified by what has been a historic season for the SEC with many teams flourishing. In fact, the Tigers are the only team in the league without a win over an AP Top 25 team, and LSU and South Carolina are the only teams with less than 2 ranked wins on the season.
Overall, LSU is 44-47 under McMahon with a 13-35 mark in SEC action. We’ll see if he turns the Tigers around with more financial support for the roster.
