MLB NEWS — I know I can’t be the only one (outside of California) who’s just so depressed at the trajectory of Mike Trout’s career. Not only has he competed in ONLY three playoff games throughout his 14-year tenure (…and those games were played 11 years ago), but he’s also been completely derailed by injuries. In fact, Mike Trout has played in more than 100 games just once since 2019 and has played in 140+ games just once over the last eight seasons.
That stinks, because through 2019, I’m pretty sure he was on track to be one of the G.O.A.T.s. And while you can still make whatever argument you want for the way it’s played out (he’ll still be a Hall of Famer, for example), I don’t think anyone can say this broke in MLB’s favor. Just a total waste of a generational superstar.
In any case, I bring that up today, because Mike Trout’s time as a full-time center fielder has come to an end. He’ll be the Angels’ right fielder this season.

— MLB Network (@MLBNetwork) February 17, 2025Here’s hoping this move – which is being made to help preserve his body a bit – can keep Mike Trout on the field and give us a full season of his dominance. I love watching that guy play baseball, and we’ve gone too long without a full season out of him.
As a reminder, Trout still has six years left on his deal with the Angels, each at a $35.45M price tag.
Rafael Devers Drama in Boston
On the flip side of the country, Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers is not at all interested in moving positions, even after the Red Sox acquired a far superior defender in free agent 3B Alex Bregman.
Rafael Devers was adamant that third base is his position. When asked if he’d be open to being the DH, he gave a simple no.?: @NESN pic.twitter.com/BsJYkWzbUZ
— FOX Sports: MLB (@MLBONFOX) February 17, 2025And his refusal stretches beyond the moderately joking answer he gave above. And it has led to some drama in Boston.
Here’s what Devers said on the matter via Chris Cotillo: “No, I play third. It’s my decision … My position is third base. Whatever it is they want to do is what they want to do. But my position is third base….I don’t know what their plans are. I know we had a conversation. I made it clear what my desires are. Whatever happens from here, I don’t know.” Not really mincing words, eh?
And that’s where the drama comes in. Check out how Red Sox Manager Alex Cora responded when asked about the promises Devers was given by the previous front office when he signed his 10-year, $313.5M deal before last season.
WOWAlex Cora basically said Rafael Devers shouldn’t expect 3B just because an ex-GM (Chaim Bloom) promised it to him pic.twitter.com/vFXJPsNdKa
— Fuzzy (@fuzzyfromyt) February 17, 2025“Different people here, right? There’s a different leader here, so … you know, Chaim (Bloom) is in St. Louis right now.”
OUCH.
On the one hand, you can feel for Devers, who was clearly promised third base when he signed his deal (the front office may have changed, but ownership didn’t…). And this is only Year 2 of his deal. But on the other hand, he’s a far worse defender at third base than Alex Bregman.
But even after being approached by both Alex Cora and President of Baseball Operations Craig Breslow, Devers has no intention of moving to 1B or DH. I’m very interested to see how this plays out. I doubt – very sincerely – that this materializes into a trade, especially given that Alex Bregman can opt out after this season while Devers is under team control through 2033. But who knows?
For what it’s worth, Ken Rosenthal got into it and how it could get “ugly” as the season rolls on:
