Stretches of two county roads outside Eaton will soon be paved after the county received an $800,000 grant from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs.
Weld County Road 76 between Weld 29 and 31, as well as Weld 72 between Weld 33 and 35 will be upgraded, according to a county news release. In preparation of the construction, the stretch of Weld 76 will be closed through March 27 while crews relocate underground utilities and rebuild irrigation structure.
Work is anticipated to start in June, and construction will be completed by an outside contractor.
The grant will offset a part of the cost of paving the two roads, which is budgeted at $2.2 million
“Each year, we look for ways to improve our transportation infrastructure,” Weld County Commissioner Chairwoman Perry Buck said in the release. “Doing so does have an expense, however, and anytime we can secure a grant to alleviate a portion of the expense, it’s a good thing.”
Before paving the roads, crews will work to strengthen the land under the road, which the county says will reduce cracking and potholes and allow the stretch to better serve as a detour route during future road closures.
“When we determine detours, we try and choose paved routes built to withstand additional traffic and limit inconvenience,” Public Works Director Curtis Hall said in the release. “These improvements will serve an immediate need as well as benefit the traveling public in the future.”
