One Jaguars defender makes PFFs top 101 players from 2024 season

One Jacksonville Jaguars’ defender made Pro Football Focus’ list of the top 101 players from the 2024 NFL season.

Mason Cameron recently put this list together and below are the criteria that were considered:

    – The list only takes into account what happened in 2024.

    – “All positions are created equal.” PFF would instead look at how the players performed relative to their position group.

    – And lastly, postseason performances were a part of the equation.

Coming in at No. 87 in these rankings was Jaguars’ edge defender Josh Hines-Allen.

This past season, Hines-Allen would record 63 pressures and nine sacks, according to PFF’s metrics. Compared to the rest of his position group league-wide, Hines-Allen ranked 15th in pressures, he was 15th in pass-rush win rate, and 11th in PFF’s pass rush grade.

Against the run, Hines-Allen would also ranked 28th out of 129 eligible edge defenders in run defense grade and he was 33rd in total run stops.

While Hines-Allen continues to be a bright spot on the Jaguars’ defense, the overall numbers from this unit were not where many expected them to be.

Of course, new defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile will have his own scheme to implement, but priority No. 1 for Campanile is making sure that the Jaguars’ defenders are exuding the right kind of play-style.

“The most important thing when you talk about defense is your play-style,” said Campanile on Thursday. “My vision for us defensively, we want to be a tough, fast, physical, violent at the point of attack team.”

Improvement will obviously be needed, but Campanile is impressed with what he’s seen on film from the Jaguars’ defense in this regard, even if the effort didn’t always turn into production.

A malleable system under Campanile, meaning one that is adjustable in real-time both in regards to what the opponent is doing and what his defenders do well, should help put the Jacksonville players in a position make plays.

“I watched a fair amount,” Campanile said. “I watched quite a bit of it, to be honest with you. I have a lot of respect for the guys who coached here and the guys who played here last year because I see strain; I do. I see effort. I know maybe there wasn’t a result that everybody wanted all the time, but I knew when coming here, there was a lot of guys that I did, or was excited with the opportunity to coach.”
