On the Jacksonville Jaguars’ offseason to-do list is filling a very specific role on offense, according to one ESPN NFL insider.
In a recent column by Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, he mentioned that the Jaguars aren’t just potentially looking to add a receiver, but they want a speed receiver within the offense.
“Expect Jacksonville to look for a speed receiver,” wrote Fowler.
Having the speed element at the receiver position provides numerous benefits.
For one, there is the downfield presence that can lead to explosive plays. But the trickle-down effect of that element is that with the defense having to be worried about a downfield threat, that can then open up opportunities for others on the short to intermediate routes and over the middle as well because there is more space to operate in.
This can also help the run game as well with fewer defenders near the line of scrimmage.
In addition to that, the speed factor can show up pre-snap with that player utilized as the motion man. The threat of that player getting the ball can force the defense to show it’s hand with the adjustments they make, and after the snap, trying to decipher who has the ball can lead to hesitation.
We also cannot forget about the opportunity to turn screens or touches behind the line of scrimmage into big plays on plays specifically designed for that player.
Offensive coordinator Grant Udinski would say recently that the Jaguars’ offense is going to be “multiple,” allowing the them to get after defenses in a variety of ways. And part of that equation is the speed element.
“We’ll be multiple and want to be a complete offense in the sense that we have the ability to attack defenses in a variety of ways,” said Udinski.
“You need to have all the tools in the bag, and then take those tools and fit them to the players that you have. How can we take what our guys execute, what our guys execute well, and put those players in the best position for success.”
