February 14 , 2025 (ABYEI) – The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) condemned on Friday two recent carjacking incidents targeting its personnel and contractors in northern Abyei. In the past two weeks, unidentified gunmen carried out two separate carjackings near Baloom Junction along the main supply route in Sector North, UNISFA said in a statement. The gunmen not only stole vehicles but also personal belongings of staff and subjected them to rough physical treatment. “These carjackings are not only unacceptable but pose a serious threat to the safety and security of peacekeepers and may potentially hinder the effective implementation of UNISFA’s mandate,” the statement said. UNISFA said it has launched investigations into the incidents. “Attacks targeting peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law,” the statement added, calling on those responsible to cease such actions and return the stolen assets immediately. UNISFA urged authorities and community leaders in Abyei to cooperate with its investigations and help bring the perpetrators to justice. The peacekeeping force said it is implementing measures to bolster the protection of its personnel and assets while remaining committed to its mandate.
