The San Diego State football team officially signed 37 student athletes during the early signing period and through the regular signing period, which started in the first week of February.
Of the 37 total student athletes, 18 are transfers and 19 will join the Aztecs out of high school. Among the transfers are three athletes from Power 5 institutions, and six from Group of 5 programs.
Any coach will welcome an influx of talent, regardless of where those players and athletes come from. However, SDSU head coach Sean Lewis thinks that recruiting players out of high school will still be the best route to take.
“A lot is made about where you get your talent from,” Lewis said in a press conference. “I think the biggest piece for us is still that the consistent heartbeat that’s going to drive this program going forward is elite high school recruiting.”
Lewis pointed out that the two teams that played in Super Bowl 59 were primarily built through the draft, and that the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles then supplemented through free agency to fill holes.
While the National Football League is obviously much different than college football, he wants that simple philosophy to come through SDSU.
Also in his press conference, Lewis pointed out that it is “too early to tell” on whether or not certain freshmen will be redshirted or not. Overall, he is happy with the work the team has put in.
“I feel pretty good about the continuity and the consistency of that locker room.”
