Already Some Good News on Matt Shaw’s Oblique

I love when a possible injury issue gets an almost-immediate positive update.

Yesterday we learned that top Cubs prospect, and likely big league third baseman to open 2025, Matt Shaw was dealing with an oblique issue that had him unable to hit the last three to four days. But, hopping on 670 The Score, Shaw said that he will be cleared to start doing some light hitting again today:

#Cubs rookie Matt Shaw says on Inside the Clubhouse that it’s a left oblique that he felt on Monday and says that after a couple of days off, he’ll be cleared to hit and throw today in Mesa. Team and he taking safe approach and hope to be full go early next week. @670TheScore

With no setbacks, that’d leave things completely fine for him to have a normal ramp up, even with the early start in Japan next month.

In addition to being the Cubs’ top prospect, with an outside shot at netting the team a PPI draft pick if he were to win Rookie of the Year, Matt Shaw is important simply because he’s such a big swing player on the team this year. What I mean is, the realistic range of outcomes for his season is pretty wide. He could be a typical rookie who struggles a bit to establish himself, and maybe even has to go back to Triple-A at some point to work on things. Or, he could be a breakout player putting up a 4-win season at a spot where the Cubs got exactly 0.0 WAR last year. Now that would be quite a huge swing, eh?
