Could Tampa Bay Bucs’ receiver Chris Godwin be a free agent target for the Jacksonville Jaguars?
ESPN recently asked 13 of their NFL experts to make early predictions for the 2025 season as well as offseason moves they would like to see.
In the ‘moves they would like to see’ category, Eric Moody selected Godwin signing with the Jaguars.
“The breakout of wide receiver Jalen McMillan and tight end Cade Otton makes Godwin expendable if the Buccaneers want to improve other areas of the team, especially given his injury history,” wrote Moody. “I could see Godwin joining his former offensive coordinator, Liam Coen, and playing alongside Brian Thomas Jr.”
Godwin would play in only seven games last season after suffering an ankle injury. Prior to 2024, however, Godwin had eclipsed the 1,000-yard receiving mark in five straight seasons, totaling over 1,100-yards in four of those years, per PFF.
Joining the Jaguars this offseason makes sense for a few reasons. One is that former Bucs’ offensive coordinator Liam Coen is now the Jaguars’ head coach.
That would help make the transition for Godwin relatively smooth, and there is also something to be said for having an experienced player within the system on the roster to help navigate the schematic changes.
In addition to that, getting more production in the passing game from receivers not named Brian Thomas Jr. will be on the to-do list this season for Coen. Jacksonville finished last year with the largest discrepancy in receiving yards between the No. 1 and No. 2 producers.
Injuries to Christian Kirk and Gabe Davis obviously limited the receiver production elsewhere in 2024.
The challenge with this addition for the Jaguars is that they already have quite a bit of salary cap space wrapped up into the receiver position and PFF is projecting that Godwin signs a deal this offseason that pays him on average $20 million per season.
A corresponding move if the Jaguars do want to bring in Godwin could be releasing Kirk, which would free up over $10 million in cap space. Both Godwin and Kirk also line up from the slot quite often in their respective careers.
At this time, there is no indication that Godwin is on the Jaguars’ radar–this is just a move Moody would like to see and for the reasons mentioned, it does make sense.
However, when it comes to free agency and the Jaguars, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler did mention the cornerback position as a group to watch.
