Love comes in all shapes and sizes, sometimes with four legs and fur.

Los Angeles Fire Captain Chris Sebourn, alongside his wife and kids, welcomed their newest family member, an orphan pup that arrived at the Helen Woodward Animal Center via Rescue RV after the Los Angeles wildfires.

Named Charger – in honor of the L.A. and one-time San Diego NFL team – the match is truly serendipitous.

Just last week, the center, located in Rancho Santa Fe, introduced the world to a Blue Heeler Cattledog, named Riley, and her 10 puppies. With hundreds of homes destroyed in the fires, lost and injured animals by the hundreds were taken in by shelters waiting to reunite them with their families.

Riley and her puppies were among thousands of orphan pets displaced by the devastation .

With shelters strained to the limit, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles asked for assistance, so the center took in 18 orphan pups on Jan. 23, including this family of 11.

Renamed Riley RUFFeree, mama and her football puppies – in addition to Charger, there’s Ram, Bengal, Raven, Eagle, Buffalo Bill, Lion, Buccaneer, Chief, Steeler and Viking – the new mama and her family immediately went into foster care and began receiving treatment, vaccines and regular check-ups.

After a press release announcing their arrival and a chance for the public to meet the adorable crew, Los Angeles’ KTLA ran a story and Sebourn saw the pups.  He immediately fell in love with one “raccoon-eyed” female, Charger.

“We received a call from Fire Captain Sebourn, asking about when the puppies would be available for adoption,” said Rachel Hollenbeck, the center’s client services manager.  “He had been touched by their story and wanted to drive down from LA to bring one home as a Valentine’s Day gift for his family.  He needed to plan his work around it and I found out that he had been a part of the incredible efforts to fight the Palisades fire.”

As a thank you for his selfless dedication, the center covered the cost of Charger’s adoption fee.  Additionally, pet food company Blue Buffalo gifted the family a three-month supply of dog food.

“The terrible events that occurred in LA last month will take many months and even years of recovery,” said Hollenbeck.  “I’m sure the firefighters who witnessed it, head-on, still carry it with them. But this adoption is just the most beautiful bit of healing in what will be a lifetime of love.”

For more information on adopting, please contact the center’s Adoptions Department, 858-756-4117 ext. 1, visit www.animalcenter.org or stop by at 6461 El Apajo Road in Rancho Santa Fe.
