New £96million train station to open in trendy UK neighbourhood compared to New York

ONE of the country’s coolest neighbourhoods is set to benefit from a new £96million train station.

After first being announced back in 2022, plans for the new train station were submitted earlier this month with work on the site slated to begin later this year.

Liverpool Baltic Station will be located in the city’s Baltic Triangle, which has previously been likened to New York City’s meatpacking district.

If being compared to New York City isn’t enough, the area was also named among the coolest neighbourhoods in the country by Time Out, thanks to its trendy bars and restaurants.

The new station will be located on Merseyrail’s Northern Line, with services running from Hunts Cross to Southport calling at stations like Liverpool Central and Brunswick.

Liverpool Baltic Station will consist of a single-storey building.

Computer-generated images show what the station will look like, with a terracotta-like facade on the sides of the building.

The red exterior will mean the station is in keeping with its current surroundings, including the Grade II-listed Cains Brewery building.

Two ‘lift’ towers will sit at either end of the station, acting as ‘beacons’ for the local community.

Its concourse will be open-plan and well-lit, with step-free access from the street to the train station.

There will also be fully accessible toilets, as well as space for bicycle parking on the site.

Last year, a virtual reality walkthrough showed other features like an outdoor plaza, a ticket office and its platforms.

Owen Ellis Architects, one of the firms behind the station’s design, commented: “The architectural design vision is a contemporary take on the heritage of the diverse industrial Baltic location and heritage.

“The materials are industrial and robust and respect the local red brick and sandstone. The lift towers and monolith chimneys take influence from the Baltic chimneys and act as destination beacons and focal points, in both form and wayfinding.”

If the Department for Transport approves planning permission, construction work on the station is slated to start later this year.

Liverpool Baltic Train Station is then set to open to the public in 2027.

The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority awarded the project £96million last September.

It is one of four train stations planned in Liverpool.

Other stations could include Daresbury, Halton, Woodchurch on the Wirral and Carr Mill in St Helens.

Three other train stations opening in the UK

RAIL travel is having a moment, with several stations being built across the country. And here are three train stations set to open in the UK…

Golborne, Greater ManchesterTrains last ran through Golborne in the 1960s, leaving the town without a direct service into Manchester. Buses and trams don’t run directly between Golborne and Manchester. But a new £32million station is set to open in 2027, providing direct links between the two once more.

Wixams, BedfordshireWixams Train Station hopes to open by 2026 and could connect people to the new Universal Studios theme park hoping to open in Bedford. The £57million station was first planned 20 years ago.

Cambridge South Station, CambridgeCambridge South Station is set to open in 2025. The brand-new train station is currently being built next to the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. The total project is estimated to cost £183.6million with the two-storey station set to include four platforms, a ticket office and lifts. Once complete Cambridge South Station will provide links to central London, Birmingham and Stansted Airport.

And the new £460million Curzon Street Station will open in Birmingham – the first of its kind in the UK in 130 years.
