‘Confusing’ new parking signs lead to $40 tickets and major headache for drivers in ‘competitive’ area

A HOST of confusing new parking signs are leading to a major headache for drivers in a major city.

Motorists in Boston have been left fuming over a new change in an area where parking is already competitive.

According to WBZ-TV, signs on Boylston Street now read that paid parking hours are from 7 am to 10 pm, when, previously, drivers had to pay for parking between 8 am and 8 pm.

One driver, Jordan Teguis, said: “The signs are confusing. I don’t know whether I’m supposed to pay on a meter or an app.

“It always results in a ticket.”

To add to the chaos, some streets in the Back Bay area are still “pay to park” from 8 am to 8 pm – which has led to some residents saying it is difficult to determine where and when they can park.

Another car owner, Jahdi Ortiz, added: “It’s frustrating that the times keep fluctuating.

“Especially with prices going up, people need grace wherever they can get it.”

She also believes that receiving tickets is a common occurrence in the city.

She said: “Sometimes, the signs don’t make sense.

“I have gotten tickets over the smallest things.”

Many who live and commute around the area already believe Back Bay is one of the hardest neighborhoods to park in.

WBZ-TV reached out to the city multiple times but did not receive a response.

This comes as another city has been forced to backtrack on a controversial new law that slaps drivers with $108 fees for parking in the wrong spot.

The new fines came under fire as drivers were left confused over missing markers that should’ve clued them in that parking was illegal.

In January, a California state law was announced to protect pedestrians as they crossed busy streets.

The daylighting law prohibits drivers from parking within 20 feet of crosswalks to improve visibility and prevent accidents.

At first, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency said fines under the new law would go into effect on March 1.

But the agency has now had to hold off on issuing fines to some drivers.

Elsewhere, Sandy Springs, Georgia, has warned drivers of a new 11 mph rule that went into effect earlier this week.

The city recently added a host of speed cameras to two zones.

Can an HOA ban street parking?

According to a North Carolina lawyer, an HOA holds the legal right to band parking anywhere - even in a homeowner's driveway.

The trick, says HOA lawyer Mike Hunter, is the deed homeowners sign when they buy a home within a subdivision.

“If you buy a home in a deed-restricted community, you’re obligated to abide by those restrictions,” he told the Charlotte Observer.

“If the restrictive covenants say you can’t park on the street, the board has the legal duty to enforce that.”

Many states are passing laws to limit the power of HOAs, though a majority of states still grant HOAs to enforce their regulations, restrictive or otherwise, however they see fit.
