Colin Cowherd offered the Kansas City Chiefs some blunt advice about Travis Kelce’s future in the NFL during a recent episode of his sports radio show, The Herd with Colin Cowherd.
The sportscaster kicked off the topic by sharing his thoughts on the 2025 Super Bowl, in which the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Chiefs. The Kansas City team won the last two Super Bowls in 2023 and 2024 and were aspiring to make history with a third consecutive Super Bowl win—though that did not pan out during the season-ending game on Feb. 9.

Kelce, 35, has not made any definitive comments about his future in the NFL, though fans have speculated for months about when he will decide to hang up his jersey. Cowherd joined in with speculation of his own during his show on Wednesday, Feb. 12, as he reflected on how the professional athlete has been at the top of the game, and thus the “No. 1 target” of his competitors on the field, for the “last three, four years, or longer.”
“He’s just a very important person,” Cowherd said. “He blocks, he’s tough, the physicality, the temperament—but it may be time to quit. Retire.”
Cowherd went on to explain that he believes the Chiefs have “kind of been patchwork” when it comes to the team’s offense. Looking ahead at the 2025 NFL draft in April, Cowherd suggested that the team might benefit from focusing its resources elsewhere as an investment in its future.
“My take on Travis Kelce has been: This is the perfect time for a clean break,” Cowherd said. "He’s got tons of money, lots of options, and I think one of the mistakes basketball, football teams do is, they cling to the end.”
As Cowherd wrapped up his comments on the future of Kelce’s career—and of the team on which Kelce has played for the entirety of his time in the NFL—he reiterated his position.
“To me, this feels like it’s time for a clean break,” Cowherd said. “He’s expensive, he’s a tight end,” adding that he expects this spring's NFL draft to be “a good tight end draft.”
