New Jacksonville Jaguars’ offensive coordinator Grant Udinski is fired up to be working with quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
“I don’t have enough words to describe how excited I am for the opportunity to work with him,” said Udinski on Thursday during his introductory press conference.
Udinski, along with head coach Liam Coen and the rest of the Jaguars’ offensive coaching staff, will be tasked with helping Lawrence regain some of his past form and bounce back this season.
A big part of that equation, and Coen echoed these sentiments when he had his own introductory press conference, is building the offense around Lawrence, his strengths, and continually getting his input along the way.
“This is a collaborative process,” said Udinski about the offense. “There are no dictatorships or anything like that in this business or on our team. Just like we’re collaborative with our staff, we’re collaborative with our players.
“It’s players over plays and if that’s true, then we have to be willing to go above and beyond and do whatever it takes to put them in the best position for success. And part of that is committing the time, effort, and resources for forming those relationships.”
Obviously, part of Udinski’s excitement about working with Lawrence is his talent as a quarterback. Any team’s ceiling is going to be exponentially higher when there is supreme talent at that position.
However, in Udinski’s short time in Jacksonville up to this point, the person and the leader that Lawrence is, are what has Udinski the most extatic.
“There’s a lot that stands out. The physical talent you can see,” Udinski said. “The most exciting thing for me is the guy an the person as I’ve started to form this relationship.
“The person that we’re going to deal with and work with on a day-to-day basis is super exciting for me. Listen, if we’re going to spend as much time as we do pouring ourselves into somebody, he’s the type of guy that you want to invest time in.”
Udinski would add that how he and Coen see the offensive from a philosophical standpoint is very similar. I’m sure to some degree, that is rooted in Coen’s time working with Sean McVay, and Udinski’s time with Kevin O’Connell, who was a former offensive coordinator under McVay with the Rams.
While the offense is going to be built around Lawrence, an underlying theme schematically is that the Jaguars’ are going to be “multiple,” as Udinski put it.
This means having a strong running game to lean on so the Jaguars don’t become one-dimensional and predictable.
In addition to that, if we look at other McVay-esque offenses, that likely means the usage of pre-snap motion, running a variety of plays from a few personnel packages, along with running like-plays, or plays that look similar but are quite different with those concepts building off each other throughout the course of a game.
All of that will play a role in keep opposing defenses off-balance and guessing, and therefore, creating more opportunities for Lawrence to exploit.
“We’ll be multiple and want to be a complete offense in the sense that we have the ability to attack defenses in a variety of ways,” added Udinski.
“You need to have all the tools in the bag, and then take those tools and fit them to the players that you have. How can we take what our guys execute, what our guys execute well, and put those players in the best position for success.”
