This is not something I thought I would be writing about, but no, the Jacksonville Jaguars are not trading quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
The speculation started when Ryan Burr of the Big 10 Network posted this on X on Thursday morning:
“Steelers have made inquiries to the Jaguars about a trade for QB Trevor Lawerence. This directly from the horses mouth in the Jags organization. WOW!”

However, a short while later, ESPN’s Jaguars beat reporter, Michael DiRocco, shot down that “ridiculous” idea.
“Regarding recent report that Steelers have inquired about a trade for Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence, a Jaguars source said there’s “no chance” they’ll trade Lawrence and called the idea “ridiculous.”

To state the obvious, “no chance” and “ridiculous” are two good ways to describe all of this.
Lawrence is a supremely talented quarterback, and while yes, a rebound in 2025 is needed, that’s the main reason the Jaguars hired Liam Coen as their next head coach.
In fact, owner Shad Khan said that the primary question he asked all head coaching candidates was, how would they get Lawrence and the offense back on track?
“What was the fundamental thing that we need to address And the No. 1 thing obviously is the quarterback position,” said Khan. “Our commitment to Trevor, I think it’s well known, and I believe in him, so it started with that. And that was the fundamental question to all of the candidates: how would they do it? And after we got done with that, it was very evident to me that Liam was the guy.”
In Coen’s first and only season with Tampa Bay in 2024, the Bucs’ offense finished top five in scoring and they were the only offense in the NFL to rank top five in passing yards per game and rushing yards per game. In addition to all of that, quarterback Baker Mayfield had a career-year in many respects.
Building the offense around Lawrence will be a crucial element to all of this, as will having an improved run game to lean on.
We can also glean from Coen’s time working with Sean McVay, that pre-snap motion and versatility, as in running a variety of plays from just a few personnel groupings, along with running like-plays, or plays that begin similarly but end up quite different, will be a part of the offense as well and help put Lawrence in a position to succeed.
As Khan mentioned, the Jaguars’ commitment to Lawrence is well known. You can look at last offseason’s contract extension and the revamping of the coaching staff this offseason as examples of that commitment.
