Bulls Injury Update: Lonzo Ball Missing Third Straight, Ayo Dosunmu’s Status

The Chicago Bulls will play their third straight game without Lonzo Ball.

The veteran point guard sat out the team’s matchup with Minnesota, as it was the backend of a back-to-back. An illness forced him to remain sidelined for Chicago’s battle with Golden State, and Ball has entered this week still dealing with that sickness. With that being the case – and the Bulls staring at another back-to-back set before All-Star Weekend – Ball has been ruled out for the first of two games against the Detroit Pistons. The Bulls are surely hoping he can use this extra day off to regain his strength and suit up on Wednesday.

If one thing is for sure, Billy Donovan’s life will be that much harder when Ball is back on the floor. Not only will he have to decide if rookie Matas Buzelis will remain in the starting lineup, but he will have to get extra creative if he wants to find consistent minutes for some of the team’s newest faces. Tre Jones and Kevin Huerter each clocked 17+ minutes in Chicago’s meeting with the Warriors, while Zach Collins failed to see the floor. Whether it be to evaluate their future fit with the organization or to bolster their trade stock for the offseason, the Bulls are certainly inclined to play these newbies over the next couple of weeks. Ball’s return isn’t going to make that any easier!

Nevertheless, the good news is that pretty much everyone else on Chicago’s roster is healthy. The sick bug seems to be going around the locker room, as K.C. Johnson shared that Ayo Dosunmu was sent home during practice on Monday. However, Dosunmu is currently listed as a “probable” on the latest injury report and is expected to suit up.

The Bulls may need to lean a little extra on Dosunmu over the next two games. Cade Cunningham has played tremendously this season, and Dosunmu’s length may be the Bulls’ best bet at slowing down the six-foot-six guard, especially with Ball still out. Not to mention, the Pistons are one of the NBA’s highest-scoring teams in the fastbreak, which we all know is Dosunmu’s bread-and-butter. The Bulls will hope he can help even that playing field.

Bulls list Lonzo Ball out vs. Pistons, as Billy Donovan hinted at yesterday. Ball doesn’t play in one of B2B games anyway and this gives him one more day to try to beat illness. Ayo Dosunmu is probable after being sent home from practice yesterday with illness.
