Even though the NFL coaching carousel has come to a stop now that the New Orleans Saints have hired a head coach, there is still one prominent opening to be filled — and it could belong to Ian Cunningham.
The MMQB’s Albert Breer reports that the Chicago Bears assistant general manager will interview Friday for the Jacksonville Jaguars open GM gig:

The move came after Jacksonville had what was described as a mutual parting of ways with Trent Baalke — and only after it was made clear that none of the candidates in this hiring cycle wanted to work with him as their general manager. So not only did that decision clear the way for Coen to leave his post as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator, but it also could turn out to create a path for Ian Cunningham to become a general manager.
I do not take it lightly that Breer describes Cunningham as “a strong candidate” while making the connection to Coen.
Ian Cunningham and the Jacksonville Jaguars?
If it feels like we have been discussing the possibility of Ian Cunningham landing with the Jacksonville Jaguars for a while, just know that your mind is not playing tricks on you. In January, we mentioned keeping an eye on Cunningham as a possible Jaguars GM candidate. Three days later, it was reported that the right-hand man to Bears General Manager Ryan Poles was “in contention” for the gig. A few days after that, the first report surfaced of Jacksonville wanting to interview Cunningham for the job. And unless something unexpected happens, that interview will take place on Friday.
This is not Ian Cunningham’s first rodeo as a general manager candidate. Cunningham, who has held the assistant GM title in Chicago since 2022, interviewed for positions with the Washington Commanders, Los Angeles Chargers, Arizona Cardinals, and Tennessee Titans (where he was twice a finalist). At some point, you’d like to think that his day to be the head honcho calling the shots for an NFL team will come sooner rather than later. But at some point, the rubber has to hit the road. Perhaps that time is coming soon.
If Ian Cunningham leaves to take the Jacksonville Jaguars general manager position, the Chicago Bears will receive a pair of compensatory NFL Draft picks. The first selection will be a third-rounder in 2025, while the second one will be another third-round choice in 2026. Chicago’s football team hasn’t had much good fortune with third-round picks in recent years. However, the 2025 NFL Draft could represent an opportunity for this front office to turn the tide. But first, Cunningham has to land with the Jaguars. Stay tuned.
