Bregman Decision Soon?, Steele’s Ambitious Goal, Horton’s Health, and Other Cubs Bullets

Today is the 10th annual International Day of Women and Girls in Science, so give a nod to the girls and/or women in your life who appreciate a good quantum system.

I don’t know how much to put into it as a reported-out rumor as opposed to some speculation (it came as part of a big collection of Q&A answers from ESPN’s staff), but here’s something Buster Olney said about the Alex Bregman situation:

“Other than Soto, which player who changed teams this winter are you most interested in seeing in his new uniform?Olney: Alex Bregman, who is likely to land with the Red Sox, Cubs or Tigers soon; sources in the Astros organization are skeptical he’ll return to Houston. If he goes to Fenway Park, he could pepper the Green Monster while relearning the nuances of playing in the middle infield. If he goes to Chicago — likely on a short-term, Cody Bellinger-type deal — he will have pressure to produce. And if he signs with the Tigers, it would be Detroit’s de facto announcement that with Tarik Skubal two years from free agency, the team’s window to win is now, and the expensive signing of Bregman would be an all-in move.”

Obviously I get that the mention of the Cubs as just one of three teams there is enticing, but it reads more like guesswork to me than Olney wanting to blast out there that it’s down to three finalists or whatever. I do find the “soon” part a little more intriguing when paired with last night’s report about the Cubs being in on Justin Turner, and involved teams – with Bregman overlap – perhaps wanting things to happen in short order. There might be some pressure to get this wrapped up one way or another, especially with Spring Training camps opening up everywhere soon. For my part, I just want to know what’s going to happen so that I can mentally move on. There are deals on which I’d love to see the Cubs land Bregman, but then there are deals that I think he’d actually accept … and those aren’t coming from the Cubs. So here’s hoping he just goes ahead and accepts a five or six-year offer from the Tigers or Astros (my guesses) and is done with it. Justin Steele, who’ll likely start the other game, is ahead of his usual schedule (as a lot of the players probably are thanks to the Tokyo Series), and his goal is to hit 180 innings this year (Marquee). It’s a testament to how much the game has changed, but 180 innings really is a significant goal for a starting pitcher – not only has Steele never hit that mark, but there were just 21 TOTAL starting pitchers who topped it last year (25 the year before, 27 the year before that, 20 the year before that).

    — Josh Frydman (@Josh_Frydman) February 10, 2025 The Cubs have announced their single-game ticket sale for February 21, and also announced that there will be a pre-sale on February 18. To qualify for the pre-sale, you have to enter a lottery (which opens up today). It doesn’t appear that the pre-sale comes at a premium price, though, so if you’re wanting to ensure that you can get tickets to preferred games, I don’t see a reason not to sign up for the lottery (in some years past, the pre-sale came with a premium tacked on). Cade Horton discussing his health, and also how last year’s long injury process could actually benefit his development:

Caught up with #Cubs top pitching prospect Cade Horton today, who is in his first big-league camp. He hasn't pitched in a game since last May because of a shoulder strain. We talked about his health, how he responded to adversity and his goals for 2025.@cadehorton14 @WGNNews pic.twitter.com/FIc0deDQMc

    — Josh Frydman (@Josh_Frydman) February 10, 2025 Here’s also hoping that Porter Hodge can learn some things from Ryan Pressly, too:

#Cubs Porter Hodge says Ryan Pressly can be a mentor to him & the best guy will get the closer job. However the roles shake out “we’ll be good regardless.”Hodge also tells me he’s developing his splitter—he only threw 8 last year. “It’s been really exciting to see in bullpens.” pic.twitter.com/IxcJyWu0yQ

Michael Busch standing in for Jordan Wicks’ bullpen session. It’s only pitchers/catchers officially, but a lot of Cubs position players have been in and out of camp.Hoerner, Swanson, Happ, Crow-Armstrong, Shaw, Caissie, Canario, Lopez, among others, also spotted these first couple days.
