San Francisco 49ers’ wide receiver Deebo Samuel is available for trade this offseason, and ESPN NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky mentioned the Jacksonville Jaguars as a potential landing spot for him.
“(There are) Similar trees that you would entertain,” Orlovsky said. “Atlanta makes a little bit of sense to me with (offensive coordinator) Zac Robinson. I’d also say a team like the Jacksonville Jaguars could use him.”
Orlovsky mentioned the Jaguars here in part because of the overlap in scheme between Jacksonville and San Francisco.
Head coach Liam Coen said during his introductory press conference that he does consider himself part of the Sean McVay coaching tree, which of course, has its similarities with Kyle Shanahan’s offense in San Francisco.
Samuel would bring added versatility to the Jacksonville offense. During his time with the 49ers, he has been moved around the formation, which includes lining up in the backfield, utilized as a motion man, and gets designed touches all over the field where his YAC ability can take over.
That element of versatility, as Orlovsky notes, should be prioritized in whatever offense Samuel ends up on in 2025.
“You want to make sure he is 10 to 12 to 15 different touches a game to really diversify the way you get easy access offense.”
Not to be forgotten about when discussing trades is that it’s not only potential draft capital that is given up, but there’s a salary cap impact as well. Samuel is in the final year of his current deal and comes with a cap hit of $15.89 million this season, but would require an extension from whichever team acquires him.
Last season, Samuel caught 51 passes for 670 yards. In 2023, he did eclipse the 1,000 yard mark and his most productive season was in 2021, where Samuel had 1,559 receiving yards.
