DEEBO SAMUEL may well be on his way OUT of San Francisco.
The 49ers will explore trades for their star receiver, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport.
He wrote: “Sources say the 49ers are expected to explore trading Samuel this offseason.
“While it’s not a certainty that Samuel is done in San Francisco, it’s enough of a possibility that both sides appear to be at peace with moving on if it goes that way.”
Deebo, 29, was a first-team All-Pro player 2021 and has been a key part of Kyle Shanahan’s offense since he was drafted in 2019, helping the team reach the Super Bowl in 2024.
He was the team’s top option for all of his run and also a huge threat in the run game and special packages.
In 81 games he has 5,935 all-purpose yards, 22 receiving touchdowns and 20 rushing touchdowns.
But this past season was the worst of Samuel’s career – bar the 2020 season when he missed nine games through injury.
He posted lows in receptions and targets for a healthy season and managed just 670 receiving yards, 136 rushing yards.
His four combined touchdowns were also the lowest of his career.
Samuel let his frustrations be known in a social media post in December.
He wrote: “Not struggling at all, just not getting the ball!” with a shurgging emoji.
The receivier later deleted the post, but when asked about it, he replied: “You read what you read.
“[I’m] a little frustrated for sure.”
The 49ers extended their other star receiver, Brandon Aiyuk, last August – although he spent much of the campaign on the sideline.
They also drafted Ricky Pearsall in the first round draft last summer.
Pearsall enjoyed a strong end to the season once he returned to the team after he was shot during an attempted robbery.
In Week 17, the rookie hauled in 141 yards – the most by a Niners rookie since Jerry Rice (241 yards) in 1985.
Speaking in January, general manager John Lynch said the plan was to bring back Samuel next season.
“He’s a good player and has done a ton for this organization. We’re not in the business of letting good players out of here.”
However, that plan now seems to have changed.
Samuel is in the final year of the three-year, $71.55 million contract extension he signed in 2022.
