DeVonta Smith catches bomb from Jalen Hurts for 1st Alabama Super Bowl TD

DeVonta Smith appears to have delivered the Super Bowl 59 dagger.

The Phildelphia Eagles have dominated the Kansas City Chiefs. Up 27-0 late in the 3rd quarter, everyone expected the Eagles to look to run some clock. Instead, Jalen Hurts found his old Alabama teammate open deep on a play-action bomb for a 46-yard touchdown.

With the successful extra point, Smith’s TD made it a 34-0 game. The game feels virtually out of reach, though, Kansas City did manage its first scoring drive in response.

Smith is officially the first Alabama player to score a Super Bowl touchdown. While many Crimson Tide fans would consider Hurts the first former Alabama player to take the ball into the endzone with his rushing TD, Smith has the designation of being the first player drafted out of Alabama to score a TD. Hurts was drafted out of Oklahoma after transferring from Alabama.

The big play made Smith the Eagles’ leading receiver with 4 catches for 69 yards. Smith is ahead of Jahan Dotson, AJ Brown and Saquon Barkley.

Hurts crossed the 200-yard passing mark with the big throw.

With that Devonta Smith catch, he’s the first Alabama player to score a TD in Super Bowl history.
