Eagles stun Chiefs with pick-6, shutout first half in Super Bowl

Patrick Mahomes had fewer yards passing in the first half than Philadelphia Eagles corner Cooper DeJean had on an interception returned for a touchdown as the Kansas City Chiefs were blitzed to a 24-0 shutout first half.

Following a sack to set up third-and-16 deep in his own territory, Mahomes rolled out to his right and found DeJean in a wide open space with no Chiefs receiver in the vicinity. The rookie corner took it back 38 yards for the third Philadelphia score of the day.

Mahomes had just 33 passing yards to his own team on 6-for-14 passing. Former Arizona Cardinals receivers DeAndre Hopkins and Hollywood Brown were held to one catch across six combined targets. Hopkins had a key drop on third down in wide open space to end the Chiefs’ final drive of the half.

The quarterback threw another interception on his next pass attempt, setting up the Eagles in the red zone with less than two minutes to half. Just a few plays later, Jalen Hurts found A.J. Brown for a score.

Kansas City’s run game wasn’t helping the passing game out much, as the Eagles’ defense had their way with the Chiefs’ offensive line in the half, tallying three sacks, seven quarterback hits, three passes defensed and three tackles for loss in addition to DeJean’s pick-six.

Philadelphia’s first score came on a tush push, which the Chiefs thought they had an answer for coming in. It was set up by a touch pass to Jahan Dotson for 28 yards that was initially ruled a touchdown but was reversed upon review.

Maybe the brightest spot for Kansas City in the first half was how its defense contained Eagles running back Saquon Barkley on his birthday, holding him to just 31 yards on 12 rushes in the first half. If the average (2.6) held for the game, it would be just the second time he was held under 4.5 yards per carry since Oct. 14.
