Why multiple Buckeyes will be rooting for the Eagles in Super Bowl LIX

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- Two high-profile figures from Ohio State's 2024 national championship team will be pulling for the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl.

Philly will look to dethrone the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans Sunday night and win the franchise's second Vince Lombardi trophy. Plenty of well-known athletes and celebrities will be pulling for the Eagles, including MLB star Mike Trout and Academy-award winning actor Bradley Cooper.

But two men who became heroes in Columbus will hope the Eagles prevent a Chiefs three-peat: Ohio State coach Ryan Day and ex-Buckeyes quarterback Will Howard.

Jerod Smalley commentary: How Ohio State’s Ryan Day earned every penny of his annual $12.6 million

A decade before lifting the College Football Playoff championship trophy with Ohio State, Day was in Philadelphia serving as a quarterbacks coach. Ex-OSU offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, who was the Eagles head coach in 2015, took Day under his wing nearly 20 years after he coached him at New Hampshire. The Eagles finished 7-9 that season but Kelly was fired after the penultimate game.

When put on the spot by Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon, Day predicted an Eagles win over the Chiefs on Sunday. "My brain tells me the Chiefs, but I'm sitting here right now in front of The Roots and our quarterback is from Philly, Will Howard," said Day. "So, I'm going with the Eagles."

Howard is certainly ready for Sunday's game as a lifelong Eagles fan. The title-winning Buckeye quarterback was born in Downingtown, Pennsylvania, which is roughly 35 miles away from downtown Philly. A lot has changed for Howard since the last Eagles Super Bowl victory and a win Sunday would continue an incredible year for him.

Looking past the rooting interests of Day and Howard, the only ex-Buckeye player set to participate in the Big Game is Eagles running back Parris Campbell. A national champion in 2015, Campbell is on his third NFL team but part of his first Super Bowl. This year marks the 10th Super Bowl in the last 11 featuring an Ohio State player.
