Wales suffered their 14th defeat in a row as they were beaten 22-15 by Italy in the Six Nations to heap pressure on beleaguered head coach Warren Gatland.
Despite a late fightback, they are expected to drop to a record low of 12th in the world rankings, a miserable encounter in Rome following the 43-0 hammering in France last weekend.
Gatland’s side have also equalled their worst run in the various formats of this Championship, with eight consecutive defeats and without any success in the Six Nations since beating Italy two years ago.
They have not won any Test since the 43-19 victory over Georgia at the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
My two big fears about England switching Marcus Smith to full-back
Read MoreBefore travelling to Italy he had said he did not want to make any player feel as if they were a “scapegoat” for what happened in Paris but it was once again clear that the problems in Welsh rugby run deep and it is not easy to see when – or how – they will be addressed.
Italy started on their way to a first win over Wales on home soil since 2007 with an acrobatic try from Ange Capuozzo.
From there most of the damage was done by the boot of Tommaso Allan, who not only scored the conversion but also five penalties handed to him by Wales’ sloppiness.
“Quite emotional at full-time,” said prop Gareth Thomas on S4C.
“It’s a disappointing result and just not good enough. It’s hard to put a finger on it. The effort is there, but discipline cost us.”
Things went from bad to worse for the Welsh when Josh Adams was sin-binned for a high tackle on Paolo Garbisi. Despite a brief rally through Aaron Wainwright’s penalty try, with Dino Lamb also shown yellow, Wales left themselves with too much to do as they edge towards the Wooden Spoon.
“It was hard to watch,” admitted ex-Wales hooker Ken Owens.
“You can’t question the effort of the players, but Wales were not good tactically and were ill-disciplined.”
Former lock Andrew Coombs added: “If we carry on down this road, who knows where it could lead to. It hurts to watch as a Welshman. There’s no words left and I’m really worried about the situation.”
