More on Virginia McCaskey, Steelers Going to Dublin, Respect For Rivals, and Other Bears Bullets

Day 33 of the Chicago Bears offseason. We made it to the first Friday of February. Huzzah! I need to get my Super Bowl menu in order. And I’m sure you do, too. My friend Jim offered up the suggestion of these buffalo chicken wontons, which appear to be DELICIOUS.

More condolences from around the league after Virginia McCaskey’s passing:

    — Ron Rivera (@RiverboatRonHC) February 6, 2025 Friday’s look around the NFL features award winners, the newest members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and others remembering Virginia Halas McCaskey. More on Mrs. McCaskey’s passing from elsewhere on the scene including the Tribune, Sun-Times, 670 The Score, Da Bears Blog, and NFL Media Senior National Columnist Judy Battista. Patrick Finley (Sun-Times) gets an LOL-worthy quote out of Hall of Famer Jared Allen, who admits his time with the Bears was “regrettable” and says: “I should have taken less money and gone to Seattle.” Allen joins the list of Hall of Fame players that you probably forgot played in Chicago such as Ken Griffey Jr. (White Sox), Robert Parish (Bulls), and Bobby Orr (Blackhawks). Shannon Sharpe delivering the news to his brother Sterling that he was joining him in the Pro Football Hall of Fame is a beautiful scene:

Sterling Sharpe found out he was inducted into the Hall of Fame from his brother Shannon ???: @CBSSports / @ProFootballHOF t.co/3wDkk2ShU4 pic.twitter.com/HJOWrwKBf7

    — The 33rd Team (@The33rdTeamFB) February 7, 2025 A tip of the cap to Sterling Sharpe, who was the first player on a team I disliked who I had a tremendous amount of respect for as a player. Sharpe and Barry Sanders are on that short list of players on rival teams who I grew up wishing played for my favorite squad. ESPN’s Adam Schefter (via Twitter/X) notes that the list of players who are entering their first year of eligibility for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s class of 2026 includes Larry Fitzgerald, Drew Brees, and Frank Gore. The Pittsburgh Steelers are playing a game in Dublin in 2025. That’s neat. It won’t be against the Bears. When the Bears and Steelers square off this season, the game will be played at Soldier Field. I wonder if Justin Fields will be Pittsburgh’s quarterback for that one. This made me laugh out loud:

    Nah, that can't be right. t.co/LGkJxFtEss pic.twitter.com/YyP1EDa4oC

    — Brendan Sugrue (@BrendanSugrue) February 5, 2025 Over at Windy City Gridiron, Bill Zimmerman writes that it is time to appreciate Matt Nagy. I’d like to think that being a few years (and one failed coaching regime later) removed from the Nagy era would give fans a different perspective on what that experience was like from 2018-21. To be clear, it wasn’t the best. But it certainly wasn’t as bad as some made it out to be in the moment. Maybe the big takeaway from the last seven years is that it can always get worse. It is not lost on me that the last Bears game Virginia Halas McCaskey watched was a win against the Packers. © Dan Powers/USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin via Imagn Images
